Hmmm, I'm a bit conflicted about this. I know that when I bought my last car there was a hike in interest between an initial discussion and what I ended up paying. I assumed it was because my credit file wasn't good enough. Looking back this seems unlikely as I had a good steady job, and no defaults or especially high credit usage.

I've put in a request for information with Vauxhall to find out if there was a DCA model in place at the time of purchasing. If there is then this definitely wasn't explained to me at the time, and I will put in a complaint. Not least because I would have been seen as a sitting duck in that type of scenario - nice 30-something lady teacher buying a new car with her elderly mum!
Made worse because usually the sales people are male and have little respect for women in general and single ones or those making a purchase themselves instead of getting the man in their life to do it for them.  Had one chap practically pat me on the head and tried to shuffle me off to have a cup of tea so he could have the serious chat with my husband.  Husband, to his credit, looked horrified and said - "nope, she does the finances!"  I didn't buy in to the chatter as the sales guy told me that APRs didn't matter and don't worry about how the finance works!  (almost calling me "little lady").  I let him chat and then handed him my credit card and said "put the car on that".

Do note if you are affected and are complaining, the fact the commission wasn't explained is irrelevant - they DO NOT have to declare commission, the issue would be if your APR was higher purely because the sales staff got more commission by giving you a higher APR than you qualified for. Remember also that a credit file that can be thin from not having used credit can also make you seem more of a risk and ultimately, in an honest sale, the finance company does the credit check and decides what they judge you are worth which can be high or low - entirely separate from the current issue

Sam Vimes' Boots Theory of Socioeconomic Unfairness:

People are rich because they spend less money. A poor man buys $10 boots that last a season or two before he's walking in wet shoes and has to buy another pair. A rich man buys $50 boots that are made better and give him 10 years of dry feet. The poor man has spent $100 over those 10 years and still has wet feet.

Very funny.   You should have added a smiley though to indicate you were joking as someone may think you were being serious with your question.

Why on earth did you give them your money then?

I vividly remember my mum being treated similarly by a Ford dealer, and in dressing down the sheepish sales assistant and manager very publicly, she swore to never use or buy ford again. Its something I've stuck to for 30 odd years now!

I didn't really, just handled the finances for OH to get the vehicle. Finance guy was infuriated that he'd wasted time and it was too late to talk to anyone else before year end to get a bonus.  Frankly having had a car that had died a dismal death OH was happy to get a vehicle he liked at a very good price and at short notice.
