After changing water suppliers I've managed to find out that my water meter is connected to the residential property above and I have been paying their bills as well as mine.  I've asked my water company to carry out a match meter to property inspection but they are ignoring my request.  Can I insist on this.  The company have been hopeless in all of my dealings with them.

    Hello OP

This is probably best on the forum here for water bills but have you followed the water co's official complaint procedure?

If you have but haven't got a resolve then you can contact the Consumer Council for Water:

    https://www.ccw.org.uk/advice-and-support/make-a-complaint/

If you haven't that's the first step and I would imagine the water co's website will detail their complaint procedure :)

Commercial users can change suppliers, so I am guessing the OP has a shop or salon type premises with a private flat above?

  • Yes I have a clinic with private flats above.  Have contacted CCW.  Was advised by the wholesalers to request a match water meter to property.  Guess I will just have to wait for the CCW to get back to me

Personally id get a plumber to install a shut off valve and plead ignorance if anyone asks, stating you wanted to close off pipe that werent in use by you just incase they frose over the winter

This is an interesting point, if the water was shut off each day after the clinic closed presumably the owner of the flat would soon be complaining to their supplier who would have to sort it out.

Not great for the person living in the flat but would the OP be doing anything wrong by doing this?

  • I have a problem, the house I live in used to be one big house, but was made into 2 houses. I would like a water meter installed as I live in my house alone, but the family next door is a family of 6. The water board has been to have a look and can fit a water meter, but means going through next doors property. When they went to see them, she said no, they wouldn't give then access. So they couldn't fit one. Im annoyed, as why should I pay the same water rates as a family of 6 when there is just me. Is there anything that can be done?

Ask them about an assessed charge.

If you're a homeowner, I think you can get a plumber to install a sub-table for yourself.
