Unknowingly 2 years without a V5C! Help!

A really strange one and I need your help..
I bought a car from an online trader 2 years ago (it appears they have now gone out of business).
I have come around to taxing my car for the second time and the only V5C I have is the one supplied by the trader, completely blank, with the previous keeper's details obscured by a stamp.
So anyway, I carried on and entered the document reference number. However, a message came up saying 'cannot continue online' with no reason.
So in the end I entered the 12 digit number from the new keeper's slip and it let me pay.
Firstly, I can't recall how I managed to pay last year's tax (it processed fine)
Secondly, I now need to register this in my name/address using a V62 application for a new V5C and apparently send away the new keeper's slip. HOwever, it asks for date of sale/transfer which of course will be 2 years ago!
Who is at fault here? Will I be in trouble with the DVLA??0
