Unknowingly 2 years without a V5C! Help!

Hi All!
A really strange one and I need your help..
I bought a car from an online trader 2 years ago (it appears they have now gone out of business).
I have come around to taxing my car for the second time and the only V5C I have is the one supplied by the trader, completely blank, with the previous keeper's details obscured by a stamp.
So anyway, I carried on and entered the document reference number. However, a message came up saying 'cannot continue online' with no reason.
So in the end I entered the 12 digit number from the new keeper's slip and it let me pay.
Firstly, I can't recall how I managed to pay last year's tax (it processed fine)
Secondly, I now need to register this in my name/address using a V62 application for a new V5C and apparently send away the new keeper's slip. HOwever, it asks for date of sale/transfer which of course will be 2 years ago!
Who is at fault here? Will I be in trouble with the DVLA??

AIUI when the DVLA get your application - and you are not the RK - they write to the previous RK for confirmation. If they confirm, or if there is no reply within xx days, they will register you and send a new V5C.
You won't be in trouble, and it doesn't really matter who was at fault.2 -
Thanks, what about any potential speeding or parking fines? Will they catch up with me?Car_54 said:AIUI when the DVLA get your application - and you are not the RK - they write to the previous RK for confirmation. Look the registration up on http://vehicleenquiry.service.gov.uk/ - what's the last V5C issue date?0

When did you last check your Credit Reference Agency accounts to make sure you haven't got any CCJ's due to lack of correct address? If that is clear then hopefully they would check for latest address before issuing any court proceedings. That is if there are cases to be concerned about.
For Speeding etc I would have thought that as it was sold to trade and still in their name then they would have got the NIP. But if they are no longer in business, who knows. As the car hasn't beed pulled through ANPR encounters it would suggest nothing untoward there.
Things may surface but you can't change that. Keeping an eye on the CRA's for any CCJ's would be the main checks to keep regular which you should be doing anyway.1 -
Seems the last V5 was issued 2 months before I bought it! So I guess they never sent it to the DVLA?Mildly_Miffed said:Look the registration up on http://vehicleenquiry.service.gov.uk/ - what's the last V5C issue date?0 -
Why would I have any CCJs or adverse credit? Sorry if I'm missing something obvious400ixl said:When did you last check your Credit Reference Agency accounts to make sure you haven't got any CCJ's due to lack of correct address? They will have gone to whoever was showing as RK at the time. After that, who knows?brutal_deluxe said:

You need to do this...

If you have the V5C from the dealer then does it have the document ref on it? If so you can register the sale yourself. If the dealer is no longer around then I don't see any issue with you doing so.brutal_deluxe said:

Thinking about it you wouldn't as you have never been the registered keeper so getting the RK name and address at a previous location (which is where people sometimes get served court letters without knowledge and end up with a CCJ) wouldn't be the case here. So forget what i said.brutal_deluxe said:
