O2 New Billing

I have received an email from O2 advising that their billing is changing from separate bills for the device plan and talk plan to a single bill for both. As far as I remember O2 were one of the first mobile providers to introduce separate billing for each which meant the direct debit for the device plan was cancelled automatically as soon as the device finance had been settled.  Does anyone know why they are taking this backward step?  Prior to them introducing separate device/plan billing I know a lot of people who continued to pay the one bill for both elements oblivious of the fact the device was already settled in full and as a result they paid far more than they should have. Getting through to someone at O2 to find out exactly how this is going to work seems to be pretty impossible ...
