Neighbours Ring Door camera facing my door

I have a neighbour who installed a ring door camera in a block of flats. The problem is that his entrance is about 3 metres away and directly faces my entrance. Is this allowed? I just want to know my rights as I don't like the idea this thing is picking up footage every time I come and go or get a delivery etc. TIA.

I think in theory he has to ask your permission.  Ring cameras also have the ability to block out a section of the view for privacy.
Have you considered that it may be of benefit to you, keeping an eye on your door for you?

    Kind Regards,

It could be a useful security for you but also when your doors are so close where else could the put it so they can see their visitors ?

There was a case comparatively recently where a person was successfully sued by a neighbour because of exactly the situation described by the OP.  https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-58911296

  • I live in a street and even for me on the wide camera angle you can see left and right neighbours front drives. I’ve carefully set the zones so that it only activates recording when someone is on my property.

Do you know them? I’d honestly just ask them how it is set up, I’d be perfectly happy to answer any questions about mine.

I think you have reasonable concerns, and given the close proximity they may not be able to adjust the settings so you are not picked up.

It's a mixed blessing - much like a school security light that shone into my back garden.
Annoying but also gives me free security - as it does you possibily.
But yes, it's more than that wondering if you're being watched coming and going.
I think Archerychicks offer to tell you more is worth taking up and learning more about it

I can rise and shine - just not at the same time!

    >Is this allowed?< By and large, yes.

What can I do if I am unhappy about someone using domestic CCTV to record me? Domestic CCTV systems | ICO

That is a very very long away from the situation described by the OP. That case was all about the persistent harrassment of a neighbour using cameras specifically located to spy on her. Have a read of the actual judgement in the case; it's pretty appalling.
But incompetent reporting in the press has left people thinking that you can't have a doorbell camera that can view somebody else's property.

Do you have a general issue with this neighbour? Do you have spy holes/door views in the front door? How do you know if any of your neighbours aren't sat behind the door 24/7 looking into the corridor? There are cameras you can get that fit on the back of spy holes to record too.

As others have said, much better to consider it free security for you than an annoyance. We have a Nest doorbell, it captures the front corners of the neighbours gardens and the pavement in front but only triggers alerts etc within our garden. It technically sees the front door of the houses across the road but it's too far for the wide angle lens.

Our two neighbours never complained about it and indeed both have asked for footage when 1) their car was parked on the road outside our place when it was stolen and 2) someone stole a parcel from their doorstep and walked off in our direction.
