PSTN line >50% price increase but cannot move to a new provider

This whole idea of getting rid of landlines sounds like a recipe for disaster, what happens about contacting the emergency services at a time when the broadband is down?

Much the same as it is when the the phone line is down or has been damaged or the power supply to the cabinet has been compromised.

In most cases the back-up capabilities of phone and broadband is limited to the capacity of the power supplies and batteries in the green cabinet - ie about 4 hours unless you are directly connected to the exchange which might have a bit longer but isn't guaranteed.

Last time I can remember a phone line not working was at least five years ago, broadband on the other hand is out around twice a week.
