This whole idea of getting rid of landlines sounds like a recipe for disaster, what happens about contacting the emergency services at a time when the broadband is down?

In most cases the back-up capabilities of phone and broadband is limited to the capacity of the power supplies and batteries in the green cabinet - ie about 4 hours unless you are directly connected to the exchange which might have a bit longer but isn't guaranteed.Never under estimate the power of stupid people in large numbers1 -
