I used 4898KwH in the last 6 weeks. Seems very high, but I've nothing to compare to. What do you guys think?
I agree that seems very high.
Do you have the meter readings that your bill is based on? Can you share them?
Also, what make and model is your meter?

Sounds like a lot to me.  We only use gas for the central heating.  We have 5 bedrooms, 3 public rooms, 3 bathrooms, 280 sq m in all, we are retired so at home all day on at least 4 days per week.

We like to be warm so have heating on all day (08.00 till 22.30) when required, but do only heat the rooms we use most and the others only when required.  On days we are out the heating is on 08.00-10.00 and 17.00-22.30.  We do not run the heating overnight.

Our expected annual use is 18,000 kWh, in the last 6 weeks we have used 4500 kWh, it has been very cold most days.  I think we are paying around 7.5 p per kWh plus the standing charge.

Neither did I to both and we used to have gas lights

Apparently there were gas irons, hair curlers, radiators, coffee roasters too

  • We found a gas-powered washing machine in the loft!
  • 12 p/kwh seems a lot if that’s gas.
I don’t believe that there are any gas standing charges in NI, so perhaps why the unit rate is higher.

Heating on for maybe average 2 hours per day

    That's very vague?

How is heating controlled? Timer or stat?

Given weather of late, if its only a couple of hours, it's going to flat out to get up to temp every time it's turned on.

So I had the heating for our ground floor on this morning along with the hot water and for one hour only 23KwH was used. So about £2.80 for an hour of downstairs heating. Does that seem a lot? There are 8 radiators downstairs.

We don't use the thermastat or a timer. We just tend to put heating on as and when we feel the need as the timer broke ages ago (hence only able to provide a guesstimate of 2-3hrs/day). Maybe that's a very inefficient way to heat the home? Should probably sort the timer at the very least!
