Noticed a discrepancy in usage - after 2 years. What are my rights?

I've been paying by direct debit - which kept increasing over the past few years. I thought it was due to general increase in cost of utilities. I recently logged in for the first time. Noticed that there was an incredible spike in use (>10x normal usage) around 2 years ago over a period of 6-8 months (meter is read every 6 months by Thames). Besides that, usage is average and there's a pattern of usage. There were no leaks in my property, no renovations etc. I live on a red route (not sure of relevance here), road in front of my flat is broken and dug up at least 2-4/year, every year. I believe that one of the digs must have caused a leak.
What are my rights here? What should I look out for etc? I've written into the correct dept (based on what the person on the phone told me) and waiting to hear back but thought I should perhaps ask on here as well in case there's any helpful info that anyone can help me with.
