National Westminster Bank daily digital online payment limit

I operate my mums current and savings account with Nat West using my LPOA.  Today for the first time I tried to do a larger online payment from her current account to a savings account with another bank and they refused and said the maximum limit was £5000.  Is this the same for everyone? I have transferred larger amounts from my own bank accounts in the past with no problem so I guess it may be because I am doing it as her attorney.  I will have to take a cheque into the bank tomorrow as I am not doing numerous daily online payments for the next week but just wondered if this was a thing with Nat West?

You can increase the limit to 20k in on-line banking.

If you require to change your 'Payment limits' using Online Banking, log in to Online Banking, select 'Payments and transfers’, ‘Make a payment or transfer’ then 'Manage my personal payment limits'.

You will need a card reader if you've not registered biometrics in the app. Any card reader is ok, they work across most. banks

https://www.natwest.com/banking-with-natwest/how-to/make-payments.html says the daily faster payments limit is £20K but it may be that there's a lower account-specific limit by default (i.e. one that you can choose to increase), or that higher values require additional authentication?

Thanks.  I will give that a go now as I have a card reader and have registered biometrics.

Many thanks to you both.  I  have managed to increase it to £20k which I think is the maximum. Saves me having to take a cheque in to the branch tomorrow.  I have never had that before with my own bank accounts with Santander, Starling, Barclays or First Direct.

You might want to check your Santander account. The daily limit is £25,000 but they have recently changed the default for many, including me, to £5,000
  • So nice to see the bank mentioned with it's traditional name, in these days of Chips Zopas and Revoults :)

I had the same with a NatWest account I have, I changed it in the app. I don't see the logic in having a transfer limit that you can change using the same authentication method that you use to make the transfers.

Same issue here, wanting to move a larger sum out of mums account. Using the card reader itself was straightforward although it was a pita getting it registered in the first place which necessitated speaking to customer services as for whatever reason it blocked the card 🤔 Having increased her limit to £20k we made a second transfer to the same payee the following day which went through without even needing the card reader.

It may not make much sense to you or I but it may well stop some people from transferring larger amounts to "safer" accounts when contacted by fraudsters.

Essentially, the lower limit is to limit the liability of the bank, as it is them who have to reimburse people if they get scammed, or claim they got scammed.I wish banks had more effective / efficient matters for dealing with fraudulent bank transfers.
