you do realise you had to re-new your licence at 70 even in the days of  paper licences

What? Is there a charge for renewing a Driving Licence just because one has now reached 70?
    no

however if someone  has not changed  any  details on their DL since the mid 1990s   they will have to get  photo  done   ( unless of course they  have an indate UK passport)

even if you are under 70  and have your papeer licence ( and can surrender it to the DVLA ) it;s free to  swap from paper to photocard ...

the 20 GBP charge is if you have lost / misplaced the physical licence  or it;s been defaced / destroyed  - although some peopel  think paying the 20 quid  claiming you have lost your DL  is a good insurance about  it coming back with unwanted changes   ( at which  you can 'find' your owld DL and  use that to support  your complaint)

I don't think that this is correct.

The Gov website states  "Paper licence for photocard with no change of details" costs £20.

I renewed by DL using the on-line facility earlier this month  - my old DL expires today.
I duly received the new photocard DL last week and it states that its valid until 4/2027. (The month of my birthday).

This morning I received through the post a DL renewal application form (D46P) which states that my licence expires in April this year ?

This morning I checked my DL details on line and, in agreement with the newly issued photocard, it states that the DL is valid until 4/2027.

Given the "Bunglerama" that pervades in the "Modernised" systems at DVLA, what to do:-

    1. Do nothing

    2. Just for the fun of it, be a good little citizen and complete and submit the paper application.

    3. Make enquiry of DVLA

My recent experience of dealing with DVLA (Previously posted on this forum and now strangely unavailable), I'm loath to contact them, as good information in seems to produce garbage output.
    Nothing bungling about it.

When you are 70 or over your licence is renewed to your birthdate.

    DVLA automatically send a  D46P 90 days beforenahd .

Because your old licence ran out within 90 days of  being 70 they have issued you a new 3 year licence, renewable in April 27.

Had you had renew your old licence outwith the 90 days it would have been renewed  to the issue date and you would have had to renew from when you were 70.

The  licence to drive  is valid until you are 70,  ( unless disqualified  for any reason or have a medical condition that requires renewal more often )  what you renew is your photograph. which must be done every 10 years.

Once you are 70 or over you have to renew your licence to drive  every 3 years.

The obvious thing to do is to apply to swap paper for photocard and change the address to another family member at the same time, then when the photocard licence arrives, change the address back to your house.

(You don't have to be resident at the address, just contactable there.)

Costs DVLA more than doing a free exchange, but they make the rules......
I want to go back to The Olden Days, when every single thing that I can think of was better.....

(except air quality and Medical Science ;))
