DVLA - Renewal_of_Driving_Licence_@_70

I renewed by DL using the on-line facility earlier this month  - my old DL expires today.
I duly received the new photocard DL last week and it states that its valid until 4/2027. (The month of my birthday).

This morning I received through the post a DL renewal application form (D46P) which states that my licence expires in April this year ?

This morning I checked my DL details on line and, in agreement with the newly issued photocard, it states that the DL is valid until 4/2027.

Given the "Bunglerama" that pervades in the "Modernised" systems at DVLA, what to do:-

1. Do nothing

2. Just for the fun of it, be a good little citizen and complete and submit the paper application.

3. Make enquiry of DVLA

My recent experience of dealing with DVLA (Previously posted on this forum and now strangely unavailable), I'm loath to contact them, as good information in seems to produce garbage output.

In all likelihood they probably extracted the data for the renewal reminders print run just before you renewed online.

I'm surprised the letter / form doesn't tell you somewhere on it to ignore it if you've already renewed.

As you have checked online and confirmed that all is in order until 4/27 I would suggest you are more than safe to enact option 1, do nothing.
  • Agree.

D46P does say "If you've already applied . . . .then ignore this form", but in micro-film small print pitch . . .for ease of use by the elderly ?

But what threw me was the fact that the D46P shows April this year as the renewal date, whereas my old licence expires today (30/1/24). This suggests  to me that they are picking-up renewal dates from a simple list of birthdays, with no reference to  the records bearing the licence term. Oh dear !

Also suggests, the usual under-investment scenario of a cobbled-together modern customer-facing web-interface tacked on to a creaking inward-facing older mainframe systems.

I've also noticed that my new photocard bears the new 2024 photo that I submitted on-line earlier this month and the same  old signature that I  supplied when renewing my passport in 2014  . . . . oh dear 2 ? I understand that DVLA were dependent on HM Passports for verification of signatures and are now up the creek as, since 2016, HM Passports, no longer require a signature on an on-line passport  renewal application and the DVLA on-line renewal process has no facility for signature capture . . .but stills requires a signature to appear on the photocard.

So new photo, old signature  . . and as we are all aware . . like physical appearances, signatures don't vary with age (NOT).

    So much for modernisation

OP, has anyone ever checked the signature on your DL?

I can remember the only time it's happened to me. I was cashing a cheque, in 1968.

What? Is there a charge for renewing a Driving Licence just because one has now reached 70?

    no

however if someone  has not changed  any  details on their DL since the mid 1990s   they will have to get  photo  done   ( unless of course they  have an indate UK passport)

even if you are under 70  and have your papeer licence ( and can surrender it to the DVLA ) it;s free to  swap from paper to photocard ...

the 20 GBP charge is if you have lost / misplaced the physical licence  or it;s been defaced / destroyed  - although some peopel  think paying the 20 quid  claiming you have lost your DL  is a good insurance about  it coming back with unwanted changes   ( at which  you can 'find' your owld DL and  use that to support  your complaint)
