That is exactly what I had when closing the account (both times).  
Looking on an auction site, there are several Virgin routers listed but only one Virgin TV box that I could find.  Perhaps Virgin get the TV boxes back if they can be used somehow to get unauthorised access to services but, maybe, the routers cannot?

As we understand, you only rent the equipment, so could be charged full price of the item if not returned.

As I've already said, you only need to return it if VM ask you to.
