That and you can usually pick up these things much cheaper than the cover price. Only thing is they don't give you turn by turn directions, and reading one at the wheel isn't a great idea :D

I'd say a partner is cheaper but that's debatable :rotfl:

An online travel planner does ;)

And it doesn't tell you late that you're in the wrong lane so you don't have to cut people up 'cos the sat nav told you to'.

I am looking to upgrade my £99 street pilot grest buy two years ago, to one that has speed camera updates (free) and live traffic updates! Looking at the debate above whats the best value as there seems to be so many around?

    Which? report : Satellite navigation

    Satellite navigation review

    TomTom GO 520

    BEST BUY

This great-performing Best Buy sat nav from TomTom works well, with easy installation and programming, clear audio guidance and the ability to tackle giving 2 or more instructions in quick succession.
Visual clarity is aided by the wide screen, with 16:9 aspect ratio, and the map zooms in to show the detail of on junctions as you approach.
Voice recognition allows ‘hands free’ route planning, which really impressed our testers – we tried it with a host of place names in different accents without difficulty.
Minor weaknesses are few, but include overall route accuracy. For example, it found the road opposite a couple of our target destinations, rather than the specific target. It also struggled a bit among closely-bunched, tall buildings.
Intermittent signal reception sometimes caused confusion. But it did generally well in London and clearly identified the congestion charge zone in time to avoid it if we chose.
Pros: Voice recognition, clear audio instructions, clear wide screen with good graphics and visual prompts, good instructions, easy to programme
Cons: Takes slightly longer to install than some others

I find tomtom usually lets you know in advance of road signs which can only be a good thing :)

Well I thought my Navman N60i at £129.91 at Staples a few days ago was a bargain considering they're £199.99 at Amazon and almost £250 at Argos.... even seen them priced at over £400 on one website! Btw I've tried it out and can confirm its bloody good!
Plus its got Euro maps and a camera built in!
    Well 'appy!

ultimate sat nav device , but usually makes the wrong turns when memory cache is running low on the unit :rotfl:

The main problem with this device is that most don't work in South London and the rare ones that do sometimes don't work in north London - you can't tell by looking at them. It's also impossible to turn off the Winging these can normally winge for England - normally about Ken, the Government, Taxes etc - this is despite them being horrendously expensive ;)

The screen is no bigger than the TomTom 520/720 series and because this is a Money saving site, the overall package combined with the Road Angel compact which, as a new unit can be sold on makes this a VG buy

The reviews and quality have been tested by Consumer which that is why it is a good buy. TomTom has such a varied specification and when it states free updates, depending on the model you choose depends on whether it's camera updates or mapping updates. Road angel make it the whole package;)

and according to WHICH the best sat nav is the tom tom 520

Camera updates are only free for a year, the unit should last you considerably longer than that, that's why they give the special offer, it isn't a FOR LIFE offer, and of course it also depends on the Tom Tom unit you purchase as to the type of software in it that will require updating (at a cost of course) and that is why I maintain the Road Angel to be such a food deal ;)

tom tom tarffic versions give you free traffic updates for life via RDS-TM

  • This is even cheaper.

    :rotfl:

but seriously not whilst you're driving it isnt...sat nav's do more than the map will ever do - however, i always consult a map first as a sat nav wont always take you on the best route

  • I read/hear that the TOM TOM One V3 is good (particularly for the price)

:question:dosh what does the Which? report say for this?:question:

You can pick up the Tom Tom One V3 for £99.99 at amazon.co.uk

    http://www.amazon.co.uk/TomTom-Christmas-Cracker-Ireland-Mapping/dp/B000W3H18Y?ie=UTF8

If you go to PC World they will price match+10%

    http://www.pcworld.co.uk/martprd/store/pcw_page.jsp?BV_SessionID=@@@@0733731504.1198762067@@@@&BV_EngineID=ccdkaddmleemjedcflgceggdhhmdgml.0&chain=PC_World&channel=WEB&page=GenericEditorial&genericeditorial=price-match-promise

so you can get it for pennies cheaper but with the advantage of going to collect it rather than wait for delivery.:j
