The car never fails or struggles to start. I assume when it went in for the battery check they would have looked at the battery terminal or earth lead?
Nothing else is ever affected except the time and mileage count

i did have this on a customers bmw and it was the battery this too started fine but the clock would read zero changed the battery and its been fine for the last two years

On my TT, albeit much older, the trip meter and clock resetting is a symptom that the battery is on the way out, not unheard of if it's the original one which is now getting to four years old. On mine the rev counter stays at zero for a few seconds after the engine starts, which is another tell-tale.0
