Are fractional shares allowed in SIPPs and trading accounts, and if so why have ISAs been treated differently?
Section 7 of the ISA Regulations 1998 does not apply to SIPPs or trading accounts. ISAs have generally been more restrictive as to what can be held within them. For example, no foreign currency is allowed, and for a number of years cash-like investments were non-qualifying. You can even wrap a commercial property or land with a SIPP.
  • Reviving the thread, but it's still relevent. Is it sensible if you are starting out in ETF S&S ISA investing to go with a whole share provider and not fractional shares?

InvestEngine I was consdiering but with this 'uncertainty' and cryptic annoucement from the chancellor I may go elsewhere for the sake of a bit of cashback + fees.

You can get the cashback using a trading account unless things have changed. That's what I did.

Personally I'd go with whoever suits your current requirements, and then revisit options if/when the fractional shares in ISAs becomes a reality (and the platforms have had a chance to react), but then again, the whole issue of fractional shares seems gimmicky and irrelevant to me - perhaps it's pertinent to those wishing to buy into Berkshire Hathaway A shares, but the vast majority of shares are available at sensible prices.
