Why do some banks not include middle name on bank cards letters statements etc!

For Example name is John Taylor Smith (not real name)

Debit cards/letters
Bank 1 Mr John T Smith
Bank 2 Mr John Smith
Bank 3 Mr John Taylor smith

Why is it that banks are different! Is that due to too many letters etc! I Prefer my full name on debit cards letters etc

what do you guys think! Do your banks use your full name?

I think what difference does it make?

That said I prefer when initials are used as less typing when using the card online.

I have a mixture of initials and full name as well

it’s differs from bank to bank - sometime ago when I got married and changed my name. I asked the bank to ensure my full name was on my debit cards and they did.

I think the only bank that won’t allow full names is HSBC and First Direct
Im an ex employee RBS Group

    Doesn't matter what you type.
I just use my first name and never been declined.

I find it a pain in the backside. I have 2 Christian names and I have always been known by my middle name which begins with C yet my bankcard says Mrs T surname.
  • I have a card on each of two accounts with the same bank - one is "A B Smith" the other "Mr A B Smith"
Back in the day I used to ensure that any card issued to me had my middle initial on it, other wise you couldn't tell if a new card was issued to me or my Dad. (Dad had no middle name, I did).

I'm sure when I opened an account once I was asked what format I wanted my name to appear in on the card. I seem to recall it offered 3 or 4 options to choose from, with radio buttons to select. I can't remember what card it was though.
  • Hiring a car recently in Spain. They wanted to charge us extra because my card did not contain full name, just initial and surname. Seems like a new ruse to extract money and I am sure under  redit card terms, they are not allowed to do it but Spanish rules.

I suspect its because we always get uk annual extra insurance for car, so they male no profit from us.

Nationwide: Title K X Surname (presumably the default when I opened the account as I wasn’t asked and it isn’t the same as Mum’s - see below.)
Halifax & NatWest: Title Kimberley X Surname
    Chase & Curve: Kimberley Surname
    Metro: Title K Surname
    Credit Card: Kimberley X Surname

I particularly dislike the Kimberley versions (I shorten it as you can see) and also because the full version as used by Halifax and NatWest is sometimes rejected as being too long - but it’s the name on the card…)

Mum switched to Nationwide after NatWest closed the branch and offered a choice of which way to have her name presented on the card. When it arrived, it had the first option that was presented, rather than one of the others which was what was selected.
  • My oldest current account (>30 yrs) has my name as Surname Firstname M   9. Appears as such online, on statements and cheque book.

No idea what the 9 is for/signifies, its just always been there.

Name appears as Firstname Lastname on debit card, F M Surname on credit card.

Why would you want your full name? Are you prone to forgetting it or something? Can go multiple years without using my middle name personally.

Family isn't from the UK and so naming is slightly different, so her mum's name is:

Mrs Marianna Ana-Lucia PaternalSurname de HusbandPaternalSurname

In principle she does have her full name on the card other than there isn't enough room for it all and so she actually has "Mrs Marianna Ana-Lucia PaternalSurname de H". It in itself is an odd decision to truncate as informally/day to day use she'd sign Marianna de HusbandPaternalSurname and drop her middle name and her dad's surname.

Some banks do give you a choice but using initials etc gives you much more space for those with multiple middle names etc.
