browsing online the op could get a reconditioned engine 1.2 turbo complete from say £1200 to £1600 from a 2016 car on eBay companies.
get it fitted, then sell car, pay off finance, or do a voluntary termination if the op is 50% of total payments, as the car is fixed and ok to hand back,
then buy a used car that has a timing chain?
maybe better than a repair, as a repair may be more costly than I originally thought.
I learned the wet belt problems were in cars 2012 to 2016, and from 2018 Peugeot installed a stronger belt
I loved my 2017 Allure 1.2 turbo and my 2016 GTi 1.6;turbo, I had 2;cars, sold both.
it was the 10 year no need to change belt advert that caught my eye for the 1.2 turbo by Peugeot.
car run fine , great low end power.
but the more I research the luckier I feel selling the 1.2 turbo, I think my GTi 1.6;turbo had different wet belt. but I sold it to to reduce my overall debts.
I own an old vauxhall petrol worth £800 now and working out if it's worth getting new belt and water pump, as I don't know car history, but the car is only worth £800, years mot, no advisories , , but 134000 miles, i've had it now almost 2'years.
I only drive 3000 miles a year, it has a solenoid knock on start up and stays there at 800 rpm, but goes away above those revs, was told it's a solenoid that moves into place in the twin cam at top of the engine, it would be £200 min to investigate and fix
3 garages listened to noise, vauxhall said it was the plastic engine cover? a specialist said it's big end, scrap it, whilst another said it's the solenoid knock at top of head, sounds like a quiet diesel on Rickover, but it's a petrol
it doesn't sound like worn camshaft you get at all revs on old vauxhalls, I've had many vauxhalls.
wonder who is right lol that was 2'years ago.
but I've lived with it for 2 years, car has power and no smoke,1.8 petrol
anyway I hope the op has made a decision that doesn't involve scrapping their car! for pennies !!Christians Against Poverty solved my debt problem, when all other debt charities failed. Give them a call !! ( You don't have to be a Christian ! )

In most cases a chain is less risky but some do have problems.
VAG got caught out when they used an old cutting tool to stamp out links to their chains a few years ago.
Vauxhall Ecotec's used to love eating chain tensioners.
If/when they do go wrong, they all tend to be a bit fussy to repair still.
A normal, dry belt system is usually easy and cheap to replace and it's mainly reliable if changed at the correct intervals.
One or two were notorious for going a bit too soon, like the Busso engine's belt, but most owners knew and Alfa reduced the interval anyway.
These days I think it's getting more and more risky to run most modern cars outside of warranty (and therefore outside the dealer network).
One or two you stand a better chance, if you pick carefully and some have some pretty decent warranty periods which should also help, if they still qualify.
There's usually something serious to bite you with all of them.

Even with a good engine going to need a bit TLC, like a new belt.0 -
if the op gets the used engine fitted , then it's the finance companies worry now if he hands car back.
he won't have to deal or explain things to potential worried buyers if he sells privately
or he could sell to carwow like I did, once replaced engine is in,
I got amazing price, finance cleared, equity credited in bank in 5:mins, the guy that picked car up made sure the equity went into my bank and finance cleared before he drove it away
£2500 more than we buy any car!!Christians Against Poverty solved my debt problem, when all other debt charities failed. Give them a call !! ( You don't have to be a Christian ! )

If you bought your car a few years ago, it was in today's terms, cheap.
Since then new car prices have rocketed and dragged the price of used up which has left owners with either very little depreciation or if it's on a finance scheme like PCP, a chunk of equity.
But saying that, you still buy a new car at the inflated prices and in a few years when it's used, the used price of it would be in step with the new price and you're back to normality.
You just got a bit lucky with the last one.

i bought mines before COVID and the semi conductor chip shortage.
I got amazing price selling it when there was a chip shortage .then I bought a very old car in ebay. my £800 auto vauxhall.
my allure was an auto. on regular higher purchase, only 1 in every 30 cars are autos , and was the new 6 speed auto from Peugeot, very rare, very smooth. dealer said he had a waiting list for customers wanting an auto Peugeot
googled it can cost £1500 for timing belt change in these 1.2 engines and eco boost 1.0 from ford cos they are deep inside engine. it says be wary of the car due to belt soon to be changed and not have had £1500 knocked off asking price.
my 1.6 turbo GTi 208 had a chain
I got a quote of £300 to do my old 1.8 vauxhall. old fashioned regular dry belt
