shahpur said:thanks , made a few calls . Been quoted £120 to cut it down and another £160 if I want it taken it away ( £280 in total). Was going to have them cut it down and into managable chunks and then cut the branches off and dispose of myself but not too sure if it is worth the effort to save £160 .
Some years ago I worked as a gardener and we heard of an old chap over the road from our clients who had just paid £x to a gang to cut down the tree in his front garden. That’s literally all they did, one bloke sat in the truck, his mate went through the trunk with a chainsaw four feet from the ground. Didn’t do any more, just drove off with the poor intimidated old blokes cash in his pocket.2 -
thegreenone said:That tree is enormous! Did the co. come and see it, because £280 all in, sounds very cheap. Although, I do accept prices vary around the country. It probably looks bigger than it is. There's not very much to the top 12 feet or so, one saw cut and the tree is substantially shorter.£280 is at the lower end of what I'd expect, but without seeing more of the garden it is difficult to tell whether that figure is about right. If there is enough room to fell the tree without any climbing, and there is an easy route from the tree to the chipper, then most of the work could be finished in an hour or so.thegreenone said:We've just had a large fir hedge and an old damson tree removed, chipped and area completely cleared. Two trips to get rid of the chippings. £800. Surrey. How many trees in total? The OP also doesn't want the stump removed, so that should be a significant saving on what the job might otherwise cost.I agree the OP needs to check the company has insurance and will be disposing of the waste properly (some tree workers now have a market for their chipped waste, so it won't necessarily cost them to dispose of it), but the quote doesn't stand out as excessively cheap, unless they are in central London.0

It does seem to be the case that costs for gardeners/tree cutters does vary a lot even in the same area.
We have an annual trim around some shrubs, very large and small privet hedges etc
Our usual guy had fallen out of a tree and was out of action/given up, I think he usually charged around £400. 3 guys for about 3 to 4 hours + disposal.
We got quotes from two new companies . One at £700 but booked up for two months and one with a posh website at £850.
Saw some guys working up the road and asked them to pop around. Two of them did it in a couple of hours - £220 .0 -
That seems very cheap for a tree that size. I'd be wanting to see a copy of their insurance policy and I'd be asking them how exactly they are going to take it down as you'd definitely want that taken down a bit at a time to avoid damage to property1
