I use a Lyca SIM card in my smartphone and when i ask for a £10 voucher bundle in my local shop that deals in Lyca bundles that last for 30 days i am told that they also need my smartphone to complete the process
My question is why can they not give me the voucher and let me do it myself ?

Maybe they are trying to be helpful, maybe they have had a lot of customers who appear to have no idea how to use the vouchers. I guess you should start by asking them why they need your phone, or tell them you are confident in dealing with the voucher.
Make sure they've not charged you £100 and obtained a £10 voucher or other such dodgyness.3 -
If it's anything like other providers, your phone will generate a barcode that the pay point machine has to scan.
Otherwise you'll just add ten pounds credit and not a bundle.1
