BT to EE - Do I have to connect my home phone to the router?

My BT broadband contract ended and I've just renewed it so am now with EE.  They are pushing me to connect my landline phone to the router.  Do I need to do this?  I am loathe to change a set up that is working fine at the moment.  Is the phone plugged into the socket on the wall going to stop working at some point?
EE seem very keen for me to connect the phone digitally, but I'm not sure what the advantages and disadvantages of this are for me.

Yes it will, as part of the PSTN switch off which is due to complete by the end of next year

Thanks littleboo.  Are there any advantages or disadvantages to connecting digitally sooner rather than later?
  • Well if you want to continue to use it you'll have to connect it, there's a stop/sell on PSTN so you'll have been switched as part of the order but in a cross over period so it'll eventually stop working if not changed

I've not heard of this ? I'm with Vodafone and my phone is not plugged into my router. Does that mean we're all be using VOIP phones post switch off ? Meaning that my phone won't work if my wifi goes down

Yes, everyone will be on VOIP and it means the phone service wont work if the broadband service is down, in the same way that phones today don't work if there is a line fault. It also means that in the event of a power cut, it wont work, unless you have some sort of battery backup to keep the router powered. However, many people rely solely on cordless phones which also don't work in a power cut.
