Yes, the answer is increasing digital literacy so that people can spot a scam. The vast majority are obvious and when reported get taken down.

Companies like Google and Facebook vetting their advertisers would help, I've seen plenty of these ads on Youtube.

Google failed to stop the 'shyster' (Martin Lewis's name for them) websites offering expensive 'services' for things that were free or cheaper from the official websites:

I ordered perfume from The perfume shop, on their official website. I paid and the money came out of my account. No perfume. Was sent a link to pay an extra £1 for a delivery fee. (I should have known) still no perfume. The perfume shop have said that they didn't get my order and that the order number isn't correct. Then the extra delivery company took another £25 out of my account. The shop on my bank statement is saying leggingsoutletsho and the delivery company are called Carrierscheck.com

My bank are looking into it now.
It wouldn't have been the official website.
Did you by any chance click on a Facebook link?
If I see something interesting on Facebook I log out of FB and google the company - I don't even rely on the website address shown on the FB ad.

    I don't even do Faebook.

It's sad that more people don't take more care.

On one of the leggingsoutletshop threads (Mountain Warehouse) someone actually said the prices were 'too good to be true' but still went ahead and purchased.

No one seems to be doing anything about these fake scamming websites, such as The perfume Shop which has a legit company???? Why not
Not sure what you think The Perfume Shop - which is a shop that sells perfume - could do about scam websites.  It seems a little out of their area of expertise.

You can probably buy it all off ebay from the "not a business" only selling to earn a little on the side or from the fake
accounts that popup and vanish just as quickly.  Ebay are closing their eyes to scam sellers and not a busines sellers
again. They cannot see a problem with the listings even though it's unsafe payments being requested and brand new
fake £300 products for sale at £20.

Fairly sure Vero will get them removed but that may take a week or so before buyers are scammed, about 70 sales so far.

When will people learn, NEVER CLICK ON A LINK ON SOCIAL MEDIA OR UNSOLICITED EMAIL AND THEN PAY FOR SOMETHING

If it's a genuine offer then it will be on the official website. And if it's an email only offer then check with the genuine website contact details (not off the email) to check if it is a genuine offer.

A little bit of time spent verifying saves money.
