Named Driver

Hi this might sound a complicated post! My dad had a stroke just over a week ago. How could I be a named driver on his policy, he would be unable to speak to his insurer himself as his speech has been affected a little bit. I need this because  my mum and maybe my dad now need appointments to drs/hosp etc and they can’t get in my car it’s too small.

Is he able to sign a letter ?
Never pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill
  • Do you have a power of attorney you could activate?

The other thing to think about is that is his insurance still valid, or does the policy need to be cancelled as he is no longer medically fit to drive.

Since he can't speak, you will really have to phone them and ask them.  I doubt your father will be able/allowed to drive for quite a while (if ever).

Look at https://www.relayuk.bt.com/ or similar services for people who are deaf and/or mute... in his case he calls the insurer with a special prefix code which means an agent from BT is also on the call... the agent will speak to your insurer initially to advise who they are and how the process works (anyone that worked in call centres will have had a few calls using it).

So your Dad will hear both the agents talking but rather than speaking a reply he will type a reply and the BT agent will read it out to the insurer. Its painful to do the first few times because you tend to type "can you tell them that I want to..." and the agent will get stroppy and say to simply type what you want to say and drop the "can your tell them that" bit
  • Can it be done on-line?

If he is not able to drive and you are the only driver you nshould  be the msain driver.

There's nothing to stop the named driver being the main driver, it just needs to be properly declared.

But if you are the named driver you are no longer the named driver. You can't be both.  A named driver is for occasional use only.

No it isn't. I'm the policyholder for my wife's car (historical reasons) and she is a named driver but also the main driver. I very rarely drive it.

    I don't think that's correct.
When I took out insurance I had a named driver and the next question was who would be the main driver.
