Postal refund not given

Hi
Looking for advice please. I purchased a pair of trainers and the delivery was next day delivery to be expected on or before 31st December with royal mail tracking. I paid 7.99 for the delivery. My item was dispatched same day so I was expecting next day delivery as advertised. However it wasn't delivered until Tuesday 2nd Jan. I complained to you the company I bought from to say I paid for next day and was promised by the.31st which I did not receive this service. They have apologised and refunded 3 pound as this was additional premium charge standard delivery. Is this right? Or should I be seeking the full 7.99?

You bought an item on a Saturday and expected Royal Mail to deliver it on a Sunday?

The next business day for Royal Mail would have been the Tuesday, due to weekends and bank holidays. You are lucky to get three quid back.

The goods were delivered at a cost.  I think the company have been more than fair.  Royal Mail didn't operate on 31 December or 1 January so (IMO) the Tuesday delivery would equate with 'next working day'.

Even if there wasn’t a Sunday and a bank holiday between order and delivery, refunding you the difference between premium and standard delivery is entirely fair and correct, assuming standard delivery is £4.99.  If this had happened on a normal midweek, your loss is the £3 which they’ve put right.  The only way you’d be due the full £7.99 back would be if they weren’t delivered at all.
  • Royal Mail usually deliver Tracked Mail on a Sunday, it could have been the retailer that gave the date of the 31st or with Tracked Royal Mail send an email giving a delivery date.

Probably depends on what the retailer said during Checkout, if it said the 31st then it's not really for the customer to figure out whether that's correct or not. Also depends on whether standard postage would have been free to the customer and the retailer is talking about the difference in their costs (which doesn't have much to do with the customer) but if standard postage would have been £4.99 and they've refund £3 that situation does seem fair.

Is this a wind up? Next day delivery obviously means the next day on which Royal Mail do deliveries.
    I don't think it's a wind-up.
Just unreasonable expectations of a service during weekends + public holiday when a courier may not be operating.

RM may not have a scheduled letter delivery on Sundays but so far as I'm aware they do deliver parcels on Sundays.  (I presume they've had to up their game in the face of increasing online sales and increased competition).

I don't know for certain if they were delivering on New Year's Eve specifically, but it wasn't a public holiday so I don't see why they wouldn't have been.

I think it's quite refreshing that the OP purchased from a seller who actually understands the difference between right and wrong.  I'd like to know who the seller was...

If their standard delivery is £4.99, then the £3 is correct.

    So right over holiday weekend.

If they were to refund anything. It would be difference between std & next day delivery.

But perhaps check the T/C as weekends & public holidays may be excluded & next day, is actually the next working day.
So order on Sat will mean Mon or often Tues delivery, as Sat is not a working day either.

To clarify what was the website/retailer and did they specify a date (ie order now for delivery on or before 31/12) or was it a general term (ie order now for delivery next day*). Note that the latter has an asterisk normally meaning next working day delivery.

In any case - if they’ve refunded the difference between the standard postage and upgraded postage then that’s all you’re entitled to. But, if the standard postage was free if you spend over £X and the product was over that threshold then you should get free delivery.
