Upgrading old electricity meter to a smart one

And conspiracy theorists will tell you a load of old bull why you shouldn’t get one.Cashmygiro said:Leccy companies will try anything to get you to switch to a smart meter. There is probably nothing wrong with your current meter and the 2nd rate is probably not used hence why the dial doesn't move.
Although the OP has not said what the night rate is used for, I think there opening post makes it pretty clear that they know it is faulty.5 -
Like the old bull the energy companies and government tell you as to why you must get a smart meter and why your life will be so much better with one.Keep_pedalling said:

Funnily enough, most of us who have smart meters pay a lot less for our energy, get accurate billing, without effort, and sometimes get paid if we help to reduce demand at critical times.Cashmygiro said:

But it is a free country, so you are able to carry on shooting yourself in the foot, if you wish, as long as you have a licence for the gun.6 -
Welcome to the weekend SS where the mods don't return until midday Monday and the trolls are known to visit (not that I class anyone a troll here this is just a general statement)
But back on subject there do seem to be a fair few people with jaded view if energy suppliers and their smart meter installs. I do wonder if this is on the back of the poor media clickbait coverage of obscene profits and such.2 -
It can be if you use it properlyCashmygiro said:

Mine saves me going outside to read the meter, saves me from having to send in readings, saves me from getting estimated bills and even alllows me to monitor my consumption so stuff doesn't inadvertently left on. I can also use it to compare day by day, week by week and even month by month consumption to see if my energy saving measures are working.
So what's not to like about themNever under estimate the power of stupid people in large numbers1 -

At the end of June 2023, there were over 33 million smart and advanced meters in Great Britain in homes and small businesses. Of these, 30.3 million were smart meters operating in smart mode or advanced meters. This now means that 53% of all meters were smart in smart mode or advanced meters, with a further 4.9% of meters being smart meters in traditional mode.

Can you back up these statistics or correct your post given the information above.MikeJXE said:
Yes smart meters are more common than dumb meters 57% v 43%QrizB said:Could we have a photo of your meter, please? It sounds as though you have a dual-rate meter (which doesn't mean you have a dual-rate tariff, although you very well might) and the meter has got stuck on one rate, rather than switching between them. This could be a fault with the meter or with an associated timeswitch. They will almost certainly replace it with a smart meter. Smart meters work well for most people and there are over 30 million of them currently in use; they're more common now than non-smart meters. If there are problems with the meter communicating its data you can read the meter much as you do your current one.
What they don't tell you is 12% of smart meters are dumb
MSE should be factual of that you must agree?3 -
If @Dolor was still around, they would likely point out the following regarding the oxymoron of 'dumb smart meters':Dolor said:When I was last in discussion with someone who knows about smart metering, he told me that there is no such thing as a dumb smart meter: it is simply, a supplier not using smart meter readings for billing. Installers need to fit a comms hub to install and commission a smart metering system, and it is self evident from the OP’s post that the comms hub was linked to a network - otherwise it could not be updated OTA.
