I would expect a gearbox to last longer than that, unless it was cut price with a warning attached to the sale.
If you can show he's a dealer then as it's less than 6 months he would need to show why it's failed (ie blame your driving).
You will need to invoke your right to repair or replacement under The Consumer Rights Act 2015
    Let's Be Careful Out There
  • Slightly random question which may or may not help... did he charge you VAT?

The OP has chosen not to say who the company he bought the car from is, so difficult to advise.

OP, is the company registered in the UK? If so, what is their SIC code?
You can see this on Companies House.
If their SIC code is 45112 (sale of used cars and light motor vehicles) they would find it difficult to argue they are not a trader within the specific definition of section 2 of the Consumer Rights Act.

If their SIC code is different, you might have more of a challenge.

An employee of the company advertised the car  online, this employee does some car valets on-site. I dealt with one of the owners of the company who boasted about selling large volumes of cars throughout the year. The car I bought was originally from Scotland before they collected it, brought it to Northern Ireland and did some repairs before selling it on. The company SIC code is 43342 they specialise in car window replacements.

The person I bought the car from has now blocked my phone number when I asked for a resolution.

Is the receipt in the name of the company or just on blank paper?

Was the car registered to the company or used the trade part of the V5?

Did you purchase the car from the company or from somebody who is an employee of the company who may genuinely have been simply selling a car as a one off event?

One of the directors, he had a number of vehicles at the time for sale.

It sounds like they're moonlighting as a dealer, get the police involved.

It doesn't sound like that to me - everything OP has shared so far indicates a private purchase from an individual, albeit one selling multiple cars.  It's possible that they're masquerading as a dealer, but in the absence of anything from OP that would support that interpretation (and choosing not to answer direct questions about the company's involvement), it may be problematic to make the assertion stick....

What name is on the receipt? The compnay name or the director's name?
