Do standard variable tarrifs have a cancelation fee?

Hi. I am with Sainsburies energy and like most people have been on variable tarifs. I was told of a better deal as a fixed 12 month. I phoned them up and transfered to a fixed 12 month deal. They now want £63.80 fee from me. Need some help on this one. To the best of my knoledge standard variables can be canceled at any time and I can move to another provider if I wish.

What are they saying it is for?
Could it be the closing balance based on your actual usage?
  • No it not a closing balance. I am still with them and changing over to a fixed deal. I have always been in credit.

What exactly does it say the charge is for on your bill?

  • Is it likely your misunderstanding stems from this thread and money owed

And why haven't you left them if they are so bad?
  • if you had a contract, nothing to do with SVC,  and you are ending it,  there is usually a fee.  not wise to FIX at moment.

Looked up the Standard Variable Rate tariff from Sainsburys last night - There is no early termination fee. Only on their fixed tariffs is there such a fee (and it can be quite steep).

Any language construct that forces such insanity in this case should be abandoned without regrets. –

Specifically, which tariff are you on, as it is named on your bill?

And what have they said this £63.80 fee is for?

And it most certainly will not be "£63.80"

Unless the OP knows why they've been charged, they're not going to have much chance challenging it.
And OP hasn't yet been able to tell us the reason for the charge. They seem to be assuming it's a termination charge, but it could be any number of things.
