Read the card T&Cs - it doesn't anywhere state that maintaining membership is required. From a practical purpose, the credit card operation is outsourced by Nationwide, so they may not even have access to membership data post application.

A quick trawl through the small print did not find a specific reference one way or the other as far as I could see.
However, Nationwide online does say "Member Credit Card" and "To Apply for a Member Credit Card" - a touch of the Kenny Dalglish "maybe's aye - then again, maybe's naw" ?
    Certainly not totally clear.

It's reasonable to expect that if remaining a member was an expectation, this would be outlined in the product's terms. OP would have reasonable cause for complaint if the card was closed for this reason - not that I think that would happen.

They'd need to make it a an explicit requirement to make it enforceable after application - it's a pretty basic contract law especially in a 'Treating Customers Fairly' regulatory environment like banking.
  • Bit of a bump of thread - but after having a few months of issues linking an external current account to the instant access saver (constant error messages linking RBS of all accounts, told branch was the only option before they magically offered to do it over a he phone when I complained) I left open - I decided to close it along with receiving some complaint money for my hassle.

This leaves the credit card stand-alone. I am going to let time test whether I needed my membership status or not & will report back. How long without issue constitutes proof is another question, but I think the consensus here was that all ought to be well & I tend to agree.

I do however maintain the sentiment that it is poor this isn’t outlined in the terms and it also is that I got different answers from one CS person to the next.

Part of me hopes they close it without me having to request it one day in the future, as if I ever wanted to close it you have to ring up! I must say I haven’t enjoyed my experiences with Nationwide and have had 3 complaints upheld with them in my two occasions as a customer.

I'm aware there's no right and wrong answer here but does anyone have any recent experience of applying for a Member Credit Card? I've done a soft search and the result was I "may" be offered a card. It then says the max I could be offered is £20,000. Are people's experiences that if they don't say you are likely to get a card you probably won't get one or is this a standard message? Trying to weigh up whether it's worth doing a full application or not. I wouldn't usually get a card with this limit but wonder if being a member for a few years is perhaps giving me an edge or whether it makes little difference?

I doubt longevity of membership has much to do with it, but internal evidence of good credit management and/or savings very likely does.

They have no internal data from me to use. I opened a savings account, put a few hundred pounds in it, withdrew it a while ago and the account has been doing nothing for 4+ years.
