also a clue maybe possibly found in the name of the card ie it is a credit card for members
but I agree a call to Nationwide maybe the best way to confirm this - although of course I would not put it beyond the bounds of possibility that you will be told it is okay only to find your card being subsequently closed!
in the fact I will suggest this is the nub of an answer to you - it probably doesn't matter what anyone on here says or indeed what the customer service rep says when you call them up. there is probably a chance that your card will be closed if you cease to be a member.
only you can decide if this would be a problem to you if it happened0 -
[Deleted User] said:I am sure they couldn't foreclose it if I had a balanceSorry, but I don't think that you can rely on this assumption. Condition 10a explicitly envisages the closure of an account that has an outstanding balance:If either we or you close your account, we will cancel your card but the terms of your agreement will continue to apply until you’ve paid us everything you owe.So you wouldn't be able to use the card, but would have to repay anything that you owe (though there doesn't appear to be any requirement for immediate repayment of the entire debt.Having said that, I do think, as I explained earlier, that there are other reasons for not expecting the account to be closed in the circumstances that you've described.0

Perhaps I will open their bog standard instant access saver to remove any room for doubt, even though the chap on Twitter implied that would not be necessary.
Another consideration is paying the card without a current account, but I understand this could be done by bank transfer, direct debit or an automated card payment service.
Regarding your second to last sentence, it is a shame that in this day & age, we feel we can't go off the word of an employed customer service representative!0 -
Why don’t you just open a second current account?I spent 25 years in the mobile industry, from 1994 to 2019. Worked for indies as well as the big networks, in their stores also in contact centres. I also hold a degree in telecoms engineering so I like to think I know what I’m talking about 😂0

Do they credit check to open subsequent current accounts?
In reality this would just be a vessel for making credit card payments, and from what I understand there are other options. So I might just put £10.00 in the basic instant saver (not flex related).0 -
you can definitely pay off the card from any bank account - you simply send the payment by faster payment to a genetic sort code and account number using your credit card long number as the reference2

I’ve got a longstanding flex direct account and also opened a flex account. Wasn’t an issue.0

Membership is only needed to apply/open the account - not to maintain it.

would be interested to know how you know that0
