How do you use Clubcard at Tesco Pay-at-pump?

Sorry if this is a daft question, but at what point in the process do you scan your card?

My local Tesco has no kiosk, just 6 pay-at-pump terminals and I never any clubcard points from there, although my card works fine in the supermarket itself.

When I use a self-checkout in-store, I scan each item, then scan my clubcard and finally tap my payment card. But in the pump, you have to put your payment card in first. Does that make a difference?

I'm sure I've tried it both ways multiple times, i.e.
  • Payment card  > scan clubcard (nothing happens) > fill up
  • Payment card  > fill up > scan clubcard (nothing happens)
What am I doing wrong? My clubcard is the small one on my keyring with a QR code. As I've said, it works fine in the main supermarket. But I can't get it to work on the pumps. I've tried a few different ones too and Ii even tried one in another part of the country before Christmas. No luck there either.

  • I have a Tesco credit card which is also my clubcard, it asks for the clubcard first. Sometimes those scanners are difficult to use.

Yes, all the Tesco pay-at-pump machines I've used have wanted your Clubcard first, before you insert your credit card.
I agree that the barcode scanners can be temperamental.

Apparently older clubcards don't work with the barcode scanners.  So you have to insert it like you do with a credit card.

Do you mean that it asks you for the clubcard separately, even though your credit card is your clubcard?

Yes, thats what my tesco does.

If it doesn't ask for the clubcard perhaps the software on the pumps needs to be fixed.

Do you mean the scanners on the pumps aren't the same as the ones in the shop? My card works fine in the shop, so I don't think it can be a problem with the card itself.

So either the pumps are faulty (but they can't all be faulty) or there's some knack to using them that I haven't worked out yet.

Thanks, I'll try it that way this evening.

As far as I know the machine says to put your payment card in first, so I didn't think it would do anything before that, but I'll give it a go.

The ones at my tesco ask for the clubcard first- I press it on the screen.

Hardly worth it for the points though, they were only doing 1 point for 2 litres last time I checked.

Still, each point is a penny I suppose...

I ping mine as it is more proof that I bought my fuel from there if there is a repeat of the 2007 debacle.
