DraxDomax said:I think the main thing that is concerning me is the shingles are old, some of them fallen at the end,What does this mean? Broken tiles are easy to replace.they are covered in moss and the felt is gone.Felt is there only to intercept small leaks, but you don't have any. Old houses have clay tiles without any felt/underlay, and, unlike most concrete tiles, that tiles aren't interlocking. The moss, flue pipe hole and felt HAVE to be done.Well, what's the point in asking then if you made your mind? The question is, if it's only like 1-2k more to have a brand new roof, isn't that a worthwhile investment?First, define 'investment'.Secondly, I think 2K is a very optimistic figure. Scaffolding alone can cost close to 1K.

Well, what's the point in asking then if you made your mind?OK but do I get those done individually or have the whole roof retiled? The question is, if it's only like 1-2k more to have a brand new roof, isn't that a worthwhile investment?

First, define 'investment'.
Secondly, I think 2K is a very optimistic figure. Scaffolding alone can cost close to 1K.Investment is capital expenditure that is performed to gain future value or mitigate future risk (such as leaks, damage from moss, having to put new tiles within 5 years anyway)
Well, to have the moss removed, scaffolding needs to be raised anyway... 2K will be the difference and it's just a number I gave for example.

3) Summer is really hot in our house and we'd like a roof window installed. I would also like some natural light in there. So, a window sounds best
A roof window will probably make it hotter still, although it will bring more natural light in the darker months.
Some blackout/heat reflecting blinds can help.
Just to confirm what another poster said. I have a hundred year old house with the original roof- non interlocking clay tiles with no liner. It has never leaked as far as I am aware.
