    My mate just googled and found an online basic course for adults. She had to pay for it but it wasn't much.

    Excel has lots of templates including one called Basic personal budget. It is under the "personal" section of templates which shows if you go to open or create a file.

    I can't work out how to share it on here but if I can I will do so.

    It looks like this - but as a spreadsheet & has all the formulas in it already.

    Thank you @time2change_2 - I think I've found the one. It wasn't on the first page so I'd assumed there were only tutorials as that's how it starts. I will have a look and see if I can adapt it to track categories - but again, not tonight and not tomorrow either as the time is already claimed. I don't think it can be shared without downloading so I really appreciate that you've gone to all the trouble of typing it out.

    I can change the dollars to £s easily enough: the thing to look at is whether I can add my categorised expenditure and get it to take that away from income - but at the moment scrap paper and pen sound inviting! However, I will not be a dinosaur. I will acquire computer knowledge (though it would be easier if the goal posts weren't always walking off into the distance).

    Well, I made something of the afternoon. The second load of washing went on the line, the ironing board came out and I started on some listening while I ironed. Then the rain began so the washing came in and onto the airer and I had another go at the ironing. It took much time and effort but now it's done, a stain has been taken out of a shirt and everything that's dry enough has been put away.

    I had to break the ironing into several goes as there were two emails that needed to be sent, then I collected another V1nted parcel (socks for DH, as I gave in and threw out some of his that kept going into holes). I had a free pastry to collect from L1dl and we needed more frozen berries too. After sorting out the toy box, I also bought a box for some of the small toys that are spilling out, and some cake sprinkles which I thought were covered by a 15% discount, but it turns out not all of them are included. I was going to take them back but decided for the sake of 30p, I'd keep them. At least if we have to bake for some occasion again, I will have in-date ones to add to whatever cake is made!

    I've got an excel workbook with different tabs. I don't have complicated formulas in it. One of the tabs lists all the bills going out that month and the total. Then underneath I list everything going out including planned savings, the bills total and various spending pots. Everything adds up at the bottom then I update how much is in the current account. The balance at the bottom is anything left over after all that. As the direct debits for the bills go out I update the cell so the bit at the bottom is automatically updated. 

    Then I have a separate sheet for weekly spends with the budget amount at the bottom and a row showing how much is left. At the end of every week the spends for that week are moved into another sheet called monthly spends and the weekly spends sheet is cleared ready for the next week's spends. I then update remaining balances in the first tab. 

    I've also got lots of other tabs for holidays, sinking funds, savings, etc. 

    That system works for me. Nothing complicated or fancy but then I work with spreadsheets as part of my job so appreciate it may not be as simple for everyone. I update it almost every day to keep on top of it. 

    Might be worth investigating U Tube to look for ideas/tutorials.

    You should be able to add your categories - if you add them in between other lines it should amend the formulas.
