  • HR don't always understand payroll particularly if it's a large organisation.

If both jobs are with one employer do you get one payslip that covers both jobs or two separate ones?

If it's one payslip then there shouldn't be an issue.

That sounds about right, @time2change_2! Large organisation: probably people in payroll are there a while before they see all aspects of the job.

It's all on one payslip, so hopefully all relevant data is being taken into account.

As t2c2 said if it is all on one payslip it will all be under one tax code 1257L (the norm) plus any uniform allowance & maybe fees you have to pay.  Less 125 if you are giving DH some of your allowance.  Any tax code letter HMRC send you should have a breakdown of how they work it out.  If there are any mistakes that should be where it shows up

No letter from HMRC - do they always send one? I'm sure I used to get them but since I stopped being self-employed, I've not given it much thought. You've reminded me though - time to put in a claim for laundering uniform and working from home!

I used to give Mr SA some of my allowance when I was part time many years ago. Definitely put in your uniform allowance but I think the WFH allowance has finished. I claimed the WFH allowance but can’t anymore.

I was just wondering if you used to be self employed if any notifications are actually on your tax account.  I would guess you haven't accessed it for some time if it no longer seems applicable - but I think we all have one now.  I refuse to look because as far as they are concerned I do not have internet access.  I just let them send me the bill & then argue.  My tax code is actually over 3 times the earnings they can take tax from so that's fun.  If they carry on taxing people from as low as they are they are going to have to start changing some of the K tax code rules or develop a new code.

Thanks for the heads up, it would have been nice but come to think of it, I've not heard mention of it for a while.

I have no idea to be honest. I doubt I've looked at it in about twenty years! Another thing to track down... The last I remember is ringing them up because I didn't understand why I was being taxed as I was and it turned out they thought I was still self-employed, which was my fault for not telling them. The person I spoke to was very pleasant and set it all right. I expect they are used to clueless people like me. :) Mind you, I'd prefer to be knowledgeable enough to argue with them. :)

WFH tax relief: they've tightened it up but there are still circumstances in which some people can claim: Claim tax relief for your job expenses: Working from home - GOV.UK (www.gov.uk)

I couldn’t claim as my employer lets us WFH 2 days a week. It was nice while it lasted though 😐

Always worth a try. :) I am trying to work out whether I've claimed the uniform laundering thing, and when. I remember one of the children saying he'd already had his WFH payment, and being surprised as I'd not heard anything, but maybe that's because he's more savvy than I am and knew where to find the evidence. I remember doing a claim, but not being told I'd received anything. Reading the info, though, I think I can backdate a claim, and I'm fairly sure I only claimed once.

Another tricky stage will be working out when uniform in my previous post ceased to be compulsory. There was a stage early in the pandemic when suddenly, we all had to wear a uniform (never found out what that was supposed to do, but I'm guessing it was in case they wanted to redeploy frontline workers to other establishments, in which case it wasn't entirely helpful as I remember a resident asking me why I had a different uniform from the other staff) - but I digress. We had a uniform and it was compulsory. No one ever told me I didn't need to wear it any more, and it was handy so I stuck with it. A different colour was issued a couple of years ago, but by then people rarely wore uniform to work. I doubt the form has a component for instructions that fizzled out.

I currently have a uniform for one of my posts, and have to wash it myself, so that claim is straightforward, it's the intervening years I'm puzzled about.
