Your mentioning BnQ made me think of Wickes which I prefer as their customer service tends to be better & I don't know which kind I am better off buying. Thanks.

@badmemory - I hate to perpetuate the stereotype, but I'm a huge fan of 'ask the nice young man' - drives my non-handy OH mad, especially as I'm prone to approaching the eye-candy.  OH sternly reminds me afterwards that I'm old enough to be their mother!  I do however (mostly) get good advice!

I'm more like their grandmother but totally agree.  They do like someone older respecting their opinion.

You've reminded me to check the date on our extinguisher: one went out of date some years ago and I replaced it and the nice training officer at work somehow got it recycled (through the fire station I think, though I've never seen that advertised).

Today was mostly about the rota and lots of bits of laundry, though there are two part-loads remaining. I didn't buy anything, though DH got milk, bread and salmon for dinner. Work was another three hours and tomorrow is grand daughters' day again. The little one is on antibiotics for the infection she started last week so I don't think we will be spending long out of doors.

A very spendy day today, though not by me: DH's hobby car has had work done totalling £800! I must admit that was a bit of a shock though it's his money to spend and he says the car is now running beautifully (hopefully for the next 50 years).

Other than that he took the girls to Toddler club which is usually £2 and we spent £11.55 on groceries. There was also a donation in there as the Big Issue seller has just had her baby. It must be hard on her to be back at work so soon after the birth.

While he was out he met a friend and asked about someone we know from years back, only to hear this lady passed away recently. We wondered as DH had seen an ambulance outside her house. I know she will have been at peace about this as she was a woman of strong faith, but it's strange to think I won't have any more of the fascinating conversations I used to have with her. She was a former nurse and very knowledgeable.

DGD2 is a lot more cheerful now she has the antibiotics and we had a lovely time with them. The older one remembered us playing treasure hunts last week so we had a repeat of that and the usual hairdressing session.

Dinner tonight wasn't planned so we had corned beef hash from stores: quite useful in terms of getting through frozen corned beef but it had a bit of a freezer taste which research indicates is bacteria despite the freezer working as it should. I think the wrappers pick it up when the freezer is opened and I've not managed to convince DH to shut the door when he gets something out briefly. I can't say I'm entirely guiltless on this count, but I try. So we are going to try to reduce what's in the freezer in the interests of turnover, and give it a clean out.

The Wednesday job went okay though my client was again a  no-show, but I've made another appointment. Th manager and I had a keep-in-touch type meeting afterwards, as a result of which I'm doing some preliminary work towards a directory or file of local resources. That should keep me out of mischief... forever.  :D I have some ideas of sources I can use and something like that will always be a work in progress.

I've also done a bit of admin towards the Sunday morning group. It took sufficiently long that DH, on an unusual mid-week day off and assisting at his voluntary work, texted to see if I wanted to meet him for coffee. I had enough points for a freebie so his earl grey was £2.70 and my rather generous caramel nutcracker hot chocolate was nothing. :)

Back at home I had a couple of hours' sleep then made the Moroccan veggie casserole for dinner. Leftovers for several meals there, and a cleaned out fridge base so I know what fresh veg we have and finally finished the Christmas carrots.

DH and I both had things to attend this evening and I think both went nicely. I've been sitting up doing a spot of mending. I heard a noise in the hall but couldn't see anything, then a loud rustle in the kitchen, so loud I was worried it might be a rat or something of similar size. it turned out a tiny mouse had fallen into an empty cereal packet that went in the recycling but fell out to mouse height. Of course at this time of night I wasn't going to walk two or three miles to relocate mousie at a safe distance, so I released it in the garden. It might get back in ten minutes, so I've baited the humane trap and the battle of wits is on.

I spent 99p on an ebook and renewed two overdue library books which will cost me £2.10 when I can work out how to pay the fines. They really don't make it straightforward, for instance, renewing means logging into the library catalogue, which I would have thought meant the place where you could check what's available. The fines page has all sorts of useful information apart from how to pay. I think it's time I went to bed.

Update, either bloomin' mouse or its friends got back in, ate the bait from the trap and went merrily on its way, presumably whistling jauntily. Grr. But they are so tiny and sweet-looking.

But I still don't want any indoors.

Talking of which, I did see one out of doors near the house the other day, eating rice that I'd put out for the birds. Only the robin seems to go for the rice and it eats from the window birdfeeders too so I might be best not putting food one the ground.

This morning the heating was off in church: the boiler has been erratic before and stopped entirely for now. However, all the toddler-mums were happy to meet up regardless. As there are high winds forecast for tomorrow, perhaps they are seizing the chance to let the little ones run off steam while they have a chat and a cuppa. One little boy, a friend of my grand daughter's, has obviously been listening to her talking to me as I've been 'Grandma' today!

The cleaning team for church tomorrow has been offered the option not to go in but both of us are braving it unless the wind is really bad, which it isn't forecast to be round here.

I visited a few shops on the way home and as a result have bought groceries, a 1950s-style skirt pattern, gifts and some paper bags. The bags are for the craft for the little ones and I've decided to lump small things like that under the title 'donation' as I rarely claim back. Of course, though, that means there's no realistic audit of how much things cost to run, but I think a lot of people do things similarly.

Dinner is nearly ready and I'm off to work shortly after.

I caught the mouse! This time it stayed caught so I took it out to a field edge where it jumped into a hole in a clump of grass that I wouldn't even have noticed. It's off the road and there are bushes above so that's as good as I can do - though it was less than half a mile from home so I may yet get a return visit. However, the weather being what it is today, I wasn't going further. A few times I've had to steady myself or lean on the wind, and we don't have the worst of it by any means.

I went out to do the cleaning - the team were offered the option but decided to keep to the rota. DH is out as work asked him if he'd cover today. They need staff for the projected storm-related calls. There's are leaves and rubbish blowing about the streets but the middle of town is quite sheltered so apart from some poppy wreaths blown off the war memorial, there's not much to see. I've heard that a business on the outskirts has lost solar panels.

Cleaning took longer than usual as I did an extra area. There were electric heaters everywhere as the boiler has finally packed up. However, I nipped to the supermarket to get myself some lunch and didn't even need a coat. Six degrees feels quite clement after recent weeks.

I have to get ready for paid work now, but at least I've had a rest in between.

Another three hours at work this evening. When I came out, all was calm. Thank goodness the news from the storm is no worse though I feel sorry about the man who died when the tree fell on his car. DH had lots of calls about fallen trees through work, and A and H had a power cut but the electricity came back on after a couple of hours so it wasn't as bad as it could have been, by a long way.
