No Buy Year

PipneyJane said:I can’t commit to a no buy year, but I will read along with interest.
At a minimum, I have to replace my stove, my fridge-freezer, the dishwasher - which died in 2022 - and (possibly) the washing machine.
The microwave-combi oven is also looking a little dodgy. After 23 years of hard service, including 20 years when it’s been my primary electric oven, the turntable no longer rotates when anything heavy is placed on it. Even a cake tin full of batter won’t turn. (For the first 7 years in this house, the stove could not be wired in, so we could only use the gas burners. Largest thing I ever roasted in the microwave was a fully stuffed duck, one Christmas, complete with roast potatoes, etc. It’s amazing what you can fit into a pizza tray.

How is everyone doing? I’ve just caught up with this thread. Haven’t replaced any of the white-goods yet. My excuse is that I was diagnosed with lymphoma on 3rd January, spent the second half of the month seriously ill in hospital, and am currently almost half-way through 6 courses of chemotherapy (I had round 3 drugs earlier this week).
It’s easy for me to wrack up NSD. I’m living like a hermit, in order to avoid catching infections since chemo wipes out the immune system. My DH has been doing all the grocery shopping, taking the cars to be serviced and MOT’d, etc. (He wears a mask whenever he goes into a shop.).
On the money front, things are starting to get interesting. We’re spending very little beyond the essential DD’s that get paid out of the joint account (mortgage, utilities, etc). All the standing orders to savings accounts, etc, have been suspended (e.g. the holiday account). I’ve been signed off on sick leave for 6 months and will shortly go onto statutory sick pay, when my 2 months full paid sick leave is exhausted. Normally, we’d be able to cope on one salary, but DH was made redundant at the start of this month. (Yes, he’s getting legal advice.). Fortunately, our only debt is the mortgage - fixed until 2026 - and we have plenty of savings. He will be getting a pay-off, but I’m not counting that in my budgetting.
@kimwp, so sorry to hear about your cat. Big hugs.

That's a lot to cope with, @PipneyJane. My thoughts and prayers are with you. If it would help, could you look into getting a mortgage 'holiday' for a little while?I think a bit of sunshine is good for frugal living. (Cranky40)

I’d rather not ask for a mortgage holiday. We have plenty of savings and, if push-came-to-shove, I could sell investments. All things being well, I go back to work on 22nd July, so worst case scenario is very tightened belts until I get paid at the end of August. (I have no idea what I’ll receive per month once I’m on SSP.)

The builders are in re-doing the bathroom and then the decorator starts. This fits with my "no spend" because I was totally allowing house renovation. For me the no spend was the frivolous, wasteful spending that has filled my past.
Also allowing date spend as I have a new relationship and today was lunch out at a community cafe that was fabulous and defiantly on our "must visit" again soon list. The lunch was about half what we would usually have spent and we ordered much more than usual (main and cake for after and 3 coffees and a bottle of water).
So far so good. I'm enjoying the challenge and using this as a great time to re evaluate the house too.Made it to mortgage free but what a muddle that became
In the event the proverbial hits the fan then co-habitees are better stashing their cash than being mortgage free !!3 -
