Nonnadiluca said:I haven't been on this thread for ages due to various life events that I won't bore you with, but have now spent a bit of time catching up.
Firstly, Pip, I'm sorry that you've been so unwell and delighted to hear that you're okay now.
When I delivered DD's weekly shopping today she was upset that her Ugg boots had a tear about 5cm long, vertically, next to the back seam and she asked me if I could sew it up for her, (she can't sew a button on or a name tape in school uniform!)
I'm worried that making needle holes in the suede close to the edge might result in a tear that would make the situation worse. I'm not sure what I should do so thought I'd ask the hive wisdom, (that's you lot!) if you have any experience in this kind of thing and can offer any advice. Thank you
I’ve had a similar tear happen in a pair of sheepskin slippers. The area near the back seam gets a lot of stress and forms a point of weakness. In my slippers’ case, they will need a reinforcing patch which covers the tear and the same area on the other side of the seam. I’m expecting the patch to be a thicker grade of suede or leather, to hold up to the strain. (While I haven’t got around to it yet, the people my slippers came from do repairs, so my plan is to send them photos, ask them how much the repair would cost and then send the slippers to them for repair.)
As @thriftwizard said, suede needs a leather needle, which have cutting tips. Remember, you need to also sew through the sheepskin not just the suede, or it’ll tear very quickly along the stress lines.

Besides having a leather needle, you will need very strong thread, and something to hold things together while you sew - you won't be able to use pins! You may need something to help you push the needle through too, like a sailors palm, if the leather and suede are very thick. and if you are sewing by hand.Sealed Pot Challenge no 035.

The other was an army truck driver on ammunition disposal near Cairo whose truck blew up. My Dad was part of the clear-up team.

I’ve just made the connection that his older brother (my grandfather) and sister lived next door to each other a few doors down from the village church. They must have passed the war memorial with his name almost every day.Fashion on the Ration

Oh, by all means share the story, such as it is - I thought you might have too many names to have room for that.Life is mainly froth and bubble: two things stand like stone. Kindness in another’s trouble, courage in your own.6

Please could we add..
Sapper Daryn Roy, of 21 Engineer Regiment, who died in Afghanistan on 3rd May 2010.
His vehicle was blown up by an IED while travelling in convoy from Camp Bastion to Patrol Base Pimon. They were to meet and provide protection for civilian vehicles carrying engineering stores. You can read about him on gov.uk armed forces pages.
Growing up, he lived opposite our house, and was a similar age to our two girls. He was a lovely lad, and all the village turned out for his funeral, which showed how much he was liked. RIP Daryn.

Also Trooper Andy Howarth, also a Lancer, died 18/09/2010 in Afghanistan. One of DS2's best friends at first school, with a grin & a sparkle in his eyes that lit up many a party here.
And by all means share my great-uncle's story, such as it is. We'll never know the full story.

The War Memorial
You already know some of the stories, here are the others:
Isaac Lazarus and Emanual Davis were my paternal and maternal great uncles. Both died at Gallipoli. Manny’s cousin, Leonie Keyzor survived the War and was awarded the VC for his courage during the Battle of Lone Pine. “Keyzor caught Turkish bombs as though they were cricket balls and threw them back at the enemy.” [The Sydney Sun, Sydney, 13 October 1951, p 2]
@Thriftwizard's great-uncle Flight-Sergeant John Napier Hall, aged just 21... "killed in an aviation accident in an experimental Halifax bomber near Thirsk, Yorkshire, Monday 13th January 1941. It was such a silly accident - put down to someone leaving the fuel-filler cap off - and they were just testing the fuel consumption. He was - they all were, I believe - a scientist. All killed... sabotage was suspected but never investigated, as far as my cousin could find out.".
@Pollywollydoodle's great uncle Alfred Wright, died at Ypres on 31 October 1917. He was 33 years old. Alfred and Olive had been married for seven years and had five-year old twins. Olive never remarried, and lived for another fifty-five years.
