Storage for photos

Hi, I have an old laptop so no blue tooth/blue ray and I don't want to use the cloud. or storage sites
I want to keep them on hard copy.

Important family and holiday photos are on CD and flash drive so 2 copies of each as per yonks ago.

I've taken up more serious photography now but the old computer is filling up.
I've weeded out but it's going to only get bigger.

Looked at external harddrive but expensive and no idea where to start. Also talk of corruption worries.

Wondered if the larger memory sticks were the way to go. Quick easy and cheap. I won't be viewing or editing them so less chance of corruption.
And are the large volume ones ok? Do they have any more problems than using several smaller ones?

What about the 128gb? You don't see them often so is there a problem with size?

PS. On rumaging to see what external storageI find I currently have a new Integral Usb flash drive 64gb
It says High speed 2.0 Flash drive.

Can I go higher or is it better to have 2 smaller ones.

Thanks for your patience. :)

I'm not seeing the advantage of you using the system you are.
Best idea would be to use cloud storage and a large external SSD, they can be had for not much money.... Samsung T7 Portable SSD - 1 TB - USB 3.2 Gen.2 External SSD Titanium Grey (MU-PC1T0T/WW) : Amazon.co.uk: Computers & Accessories
There are probably even cheaper ones, if needed.
Think of Cloud storage as just another back up rather than 'The storage'
CD's and Flash drives are just as likely to fail at some point.
If you are taking it all up more seriously, maybe you should join a good photography forum and see what they suggest.

IT people will usually say that if data isnt stored in at least 3 separate locations then it isnt safe

I usually keep the SD cards from my camera (they are cheap enough to buy new ones) and ask my son to store them at his house

Memory sticks are cheap for a reason.

External hard drives have a excellent lifespan and if they don't live in extreme conditions for months on end they'll last practically forever particularly if you only use them to add to the back-up...

Thanks for the info. I stagger on on a budget.
Rumrat, not that seriously. I often meet the guys with massive lenses and am very envious but can't afford that. Besides my theory is you should be able to take a good photo with whatever you've got.....life experience has taught me that. Proving it keeps me occupied :)

Bonhomie I'll check those out too. Not knowing what to look for is the problem.

    Neil, great info. Thanks.

I'm in a small aged group with a couple of ex professional photographers included which is great.
And live in a stunning part of a national park with access to amazing coastline and the photographers I meet are all helpful.

Perhaps I should start doing the lottery again. I'd love all the gadgets.

If you're not going to be viewing the photos you take   why are you storing them ?

Big !!!!!! external ssd drives are not expensive and if you want to save them properly you should two drives with your backed up photos on , one which is kept offsite and one in a fireproof/waterproof safe onsite

Although mines not quite like that , I keep one in my car which can be handy and one in a fireproof safe but not waterproof

I don't have a third backup I don't see the point , it would be very unlikely for something to happen to both my back up drives at the same time

I also use hhd's which I bought from cex for a couple of quid and a case from amazon so back ups can be done on the cheap if you wish

for  most consumer  settings   external HDD / NAS  and cloud is adequate ,  belt and braces would be a  second external HDD or a  pile of  SD cards in a  faraday bag in a fire resistant  lock box either  in another part of the house or a storage locker ( if you  had the need for one anyway) / family member's house - the difficulty  of course with that is the faff of keeping those backups up to date  ( or if you  were properly tech savvy  you  could use a NAS at the other location to back up  and they could have a NAS at your location to back up to - which is  how business  keep  they  back up back ups if  they have multiple sepeate sites)

If I could ever park my car near to my place that might (in the realms of millions to one) happen

There's also no reason why a hdd couldn't survive a fresh water dunking not a seawater dunking but certainly a freshwater one
