Bold leap into retirement

One of the big pluses of retirement - never having to log in to Teams or Zoom again 😂Sarahspangles said:
I worked out I have twelve weeks after taking off Christmas and leave. I’m going to block out time at the end of some working days to keep adding to the transition pack for my replacements. I hope that will be motivating. Part of it is a retrospective of stuff I’ve fixed and part is the stuff they need to fix next year. One of my replacements has asked me to capture ‘A week in the life of’ which I’m tempted to call ‘Meetings I’ll never have to sit through again’michaels said:I am really struggling with continuing to work until my planned date next May (7th). Knowing the end is near is making a job I don't enjoy even harder to find motivation and then counterintuitively the resulting poor performance is stressful. If I don't care enough to do the job properly, why do I care that I am not doing the job properly....
Do you have some leave to take?3 -
It was our works Christmas night out last night and I told a few I'm going at the end of March. I'll be 59.
106 days left
61 working days left
£40K cash and ISAs
£24k pa in DB plus full state pension by the time I'm 67.
£380K in my DC - plan is half as a bridge to 67, half as fun money after then.

225 days, not including deduction for hols and weekends. Can I last that long? One last perk that I need to confirm linked to a deferred pay deal. Worth a few hundred quid a year so useful, but if that’s sorted soon I may bail a little early.Moonwolf said:It was our works Christmas night out last night and I told a few I'm going at the end of March. In August when I notified my manager of my intention to retire before Christmas, today would have been my last day. I am now wishing I hadn't agreed to extend to end of March 2025 as work is a real !!!!!! show at the moment; all caused by the national customer but still my responsibility to manage (ha ha ha) and resolve (!!!).
Whilst I am annoyed about the situation I find in myself I am weirdly not that stressed over it
. My company has actually employed my replacement (unheard of), and with them starting on Monday it will give us a good 3 months to try to get then up to speed with the business, customers and their idiosyncrasies!
It doesn't hurt that at the beginning of December (like it was soooo long ago) we spent a week in Lille and then Brussels, and next week we are off to York for 3 days
P.S. my partner retired on schedule at the end of November and is enjoying the freedom.Personal Responsibility - Sad but True
Sometimes.... I am like a dog with a bone7 -
That was the plan for me. Six months notice so they could hire my replacement. Unfortunately by the time HR had finished faffing around they started a week before I left!cloud_dog said:In August when I notified my manager of my intention to retire before Christmas, today would have been my last day. Holidays are one of the best things about being retired. Not just the long haul stuff but the short breaks where, if the weather’s good, you can just head for the hills or the coast and book into a pub or b&b. It’s the freedom to do as you please I value most.9 -
Am I the only one who is gonna give my employer minimum amount of notice and don’t care about a replacement or not ? Am I selfish ? I just work for a large employer who has very little care for our area of business so don’t see why I should care about them when leaving.7

I think it depends on the person and company you work for. I also work for a large employer and have done for 30 years. Whilst I feel some loyalty, I have also delivered a lot of savings and been a high performer over the years but also acutely aware that if my number would have been up at any point they wouldn't have said "Oh, we had better save X"NoMore said:Am I the only one who is gonna give my employer minimum amount of notice and don’t care about a replacement or not ? Very often people think they are a lot more important than they actually are. No one is indispensable and funny how businesses were successful before we arrived and will continue to be long after. I know I've made a difference and that is all you can hope for.
I'll certainly be giving the statutory 3 months notice and be taking my 12 wind down days off.
If you are a part of a small knit unit you may feel a little different.1 -
I am with you on this, particularly when working for a large employer and you have no intention of future consulting type work.NoMore said:Am I the only one who is gonna give my employer minimum amount of notice and don’t care about a replacement or not ? I intend to do the bare minimum in the last year (not that I already take opportunities to take it easy at work now!). Very unlikely they would start disciplinary issues leading to sacking you. If anything, they may give you a pay off to leave earlier!
I also think training or making notes for your replacement is hardly going to have any benefit for you and if anything, notes are likely to get binned straight away or not even read!"No likey no need to hit thanks button!":pHowever its always nice to be thanked if you feel mine and other people's posts here offer great advice:D So hit the button if you likey:rotfl:2 -
You’re definitely not on your own and had I still been with my last but one employer I would have given the absolute minimum notice and zero help and assistance.NoMore said:Am I the only one who is gonna give my employer minimum amount of notice and don’t care about a replacement or not ? My last employer were also a big US corporation but completely different. I worked in a really friendly business unit and got on well with my manager and colleagues. My manager went out of his way to support us. They were good to me and I was happy to help them. I guess it depends how you’re treated.

I will give my mandated 3 months. I know they won't recruit to replace and will just share out what I do amongst other roles.I’m a Senior Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the Pensions, Annuities & Retirement Planning, Loans
