Incorrect payee name on a cheque

HI.
I received a tax refund cheque made out to MRS instead of MR followed by my correct name on it as the Payee.
There is no MRS, as I am not married.
Is there any way this can be deposited without contacting the HMRC and asking for another cheque to be issued.?

I would take it in and try and deposit it or use the banking app to do it.
Don't even mention the mistake.
Then check your HMRC account as it's likely that's what they have on your account, rather than just a mistake issuing the cheque.1 -
It will probably bounce if you try to pay it in.
I'd be more concerned that HMRC seem to be holding incorrect personal details for yourself. You can probably check this by logging into your HMRC account (if you have one) but you'll need to contact them in any case to get corrections actioned. Ask them for a replacement cheque at the same time.0 -
I don't think it will bounce as it's the correct amount going to the correct person.
I don't have this issue but I do have a name that is often misspelt but I just pay it in anyway and it has always been honoured.0 -
There's no manual checking of payee names against accounts but given everything is digital now I'm not 100% certain it would clear with an incorrect title.
That said surely you would want to check why this has happened as it does sound like there is potentially an issue with HMRC holding incorrect details.0 -
In these times of multiple genders and insistence by people wanting to be referred to by a specific title I doubt that any bank would challenge the gender quoted on a cheque.
I would however check your details held by HMRC.0 -
As above contact HMRC but do it after the cheque has cleared - or you may find they cancel it….0

Yeah, pay it in and see if it clears. You can check your HMRC details without raising any flags by logging on to your online account. Set one up if you don't already have one - it's handy for other stuff too.0

use one of the paying in machines at the bank - it will probably be fine, particularly if the names are correct - in this household titles get a bit random and most answer to several - cheques go through fine0

It will clear.1

A title is not part of a name, is it? (Except in the name of a pub perhaps.)0
