Moto G84

I've just bought a Moto G84, to replace an aging G8 Plus.
Is it possible to get rid of all the Google and Google Assistant stuff.  The G8 Plus was a much simpler phone, it would seem.
I know Google is at the heart of Android, but is the rest really necessary?
David.

I have the same phone and don't find the Google stuff intrusive. I do sometimes get Google assistant pop up as I must press the on button for too long when dimming the screen. Very good fast phone I find.

Could be worse, you could have bought a Samsung then you'd be asking how do I get rid of all this Samsung stuff as well
  • Just got it yesterday, so maybe it'll sort itself out, over time.

You can turn pretty much everything off look under settings - google - settings for Google apps - search assistant and voice would be a good starting point.

The most important things to change are under
    settings -> gestures

    1) system navigation- set it to 3 button instead of stupid gestures
    2) Press & hold power button - set it to actually show the power menu instead of the ###!!!! digital assistant.

    Thank me later :)

Thanks Facade, (1) was already set, but (2) changed to power menu.

But do remember to sign into your Google account so that you have a backup should anything go wrong or to make it easier if  you change phones again.

Does that mean they have done away with the stupid PITA third button for assistant ?

Yes no button on the left.

The power button thing is massively annoying. When it goes doo-lally you expect to hold the power button in and it will switch off, except it never does. There is a tiny power icon on some obscure screen instead that you have to google search to find.

The really crafty thing they did was move the buttons down about 3mm, and the microphone & headphone sockets across a few mm from earlier identical sized phones, so the cheap cases for the lower numbered 'phones have to be modified to fit.
When I bought mine the Chinese flip cases hadn't caught up and I got one for the 54, I think, a bit of work with the hole punch and a scalpel fixed it.

I rather like my '84, compared to the g9 power it is just a few mm smaller and a few g lighter, but that really makes a difference to it actually  being pocketable.

  • Turn off is power and volume up together, there was a small manual with the phone explaining this, As said above you can change the power button to hold for off, I have now done this.
