I suspect it's an observation by the insurance company on the sort of people who buy private plates, rather than any change to the car itself.
So, how come my private registration change was at nil cost ?

Seeing as you are insuring a Range Rover, likely they have already cranked the risk level to the max already as it is one of the least desirable cars they will want to insure in the first place. So going to a private plate was not going to change much.

Making the change online and not over the phone can also reduce cost and fees.

I’d have thought a vanity plate makes a car less likely to be stolen. (1) it’s more conspicuous, and (2) the plate is of no value to the villains.

But happy to be proven wrong.
Suppose it’s all down to the plate? If it suggests the vehicles performance has been enhanced it’d make it more attractive to some

I’d have thought the private plate would make a vehicle more likely to be stolen - since the thieves might assume the vehicle to be newer than it is and therefore more valuable.

The case I know of of an Esure plate change mid policy this year cost £30 - but they doubled the premium at renewal when there’d been no incidents, so perhaps they’ve decided they don’t like vanity plates since. They got insurance elsewhere at about the same as they had paid Esure - having had the car for a year and not needing the insurance to start immediately presumably counteracting general increases in the level of insurance premiums.

A private plate can only make a car look older, apart from joyriders I expect thieves know what cars to look for rather than the plates.

My 69 plate Peugeot has an 07 personalised plate on it and you aren't allowed to make it appear newer, so you can't put a 70 plate on a car first registered in 2007, but can do the opposite

I have a dateless plate - specifically so the thieves and/or vandals don't know it's new.

    Depends on the private plate.

We have one, but no one would know it's a private plate, unless they know us.
To anyone else it is just a XX 12 YYY plate format. So has zero effect on the cars likelihood of being stolen.

That is very unlikely top be effective. Most models get tweaked every year if not face lifted or new models that come out. Pretty easy to tell even from a distance what year it is within 1-2 years at most.

Really want to know then just read the VIN through the windscreen and you can be certain.

About the best it will do is fool Joe Blogs who has no interest in cars. But they don't care anyway.

I'm not sure a private  number plate would deter vandals, it would stand out further away then a new car to a common thug.
But I expect someone who is stealing to order know what to look for, rather than dating by plate.
