High heat storage heaters and basic cheap panel heaters in the bedrooms on E7 is probably the cheapest for install cost, Next cheapest is then probably Air to air Mini split heatpumps, Rather than a full wet install with an Air to water heatpump system.
  • Hot water is not necessary, see youtube on the benefits of cold water showers, etc. Winter heating is probably a necessity to keep the fabric of house in decent shape and avoid burst pipes (it may still have lead piping in there which are more resistant to cold than copper), possibly burn all the junk wood you are taking out of the house in a wood burning stove that you can get from machine mart etc for a few hundred quid? If your total income is less than 30k Eco4 grants should be available but figure a couple of years before anything gets done. Solar panels and heat pumps are the way to go, again look on youtube for the cheaper installs. Downsizing non-south facing windows and internal insulation should be the first step, though.

    I bought a house and I earn over 30k.

When we moved in the boiler did not work, the roof leaked and cooker in the kitchen was condemned. Not for one second did I think that I should ask the taxpayer to pay for the repairs.

Don't you think it would be better for the taxpayer to spend the money where it can help the most amount of people instead of paying for you to add value to your house? There are so many people in genuine need.

I understand your frustration but why not use the forum to help you save so you can pay for the repairs yourself?

Not having a dig but really? Cheap house at auction that is priced cheap because it does not have gas, needs renovation etc and you are surprised that there is not a grant to help you renovate it?
If the government are offering to pay free fuel for you for 12 months would you take it? You can afford to run the car yourself but the government offer to pay for it, would you say no?

The government offer grants. I'm asking this money saver site if anyone has any advice.

I've not complained I can't get it. I've not said I should get this or that. I've not said I'm surprised about anything. I'll get what I can get. If that's nothing then I'll continue with it myself.
The fact remains the government have decided to use tax payers money to fund the grants. Take it up with them if you're unhappy with this. I want to know if i am eligible in the governments criteria. End of.
I genuinely think that this is the whole problem. Just because I can does not mean I should.

Let's face it: the government is encouraging us to go greener, but it also has no money.

Every time someone takes something they don't need, it diverts money from other services.

The UK is not a bottomless pit of money.

I pay a stupid amount of tax so would I rather my money be spent on your house which you bought knowing it needed all the work at a discounted price because of the work needed when you could save and get it yourself or be spent supporting people who don't have a house, people living on the streets, people with mental health issues, people who are on waiting lists. OAP's frightened to put their heating on because of a bill they know they can not pay. Oh my god the list goes on...

Just one question is this a house that you bought to live in or a house that you bought to flip?
Happiness, Health and Wealth in that order please!:A

Whenever the govn gets involved the price of work goes up, which in turn means it costs more for someone to do it without grants, ditto with needing things signed off by regulatory bodies. Much better to get rid of the whole mess and have negative VAT on things like solar panels and heat pumps (ie the price goes down because the govn bungs the retailer or manufacturer some dosh rather than taxing them) and the only thing that needs to be signed off is an electrical check if using a new circuit/fuse. Ever expanding govn/council bureaucracies/mini empires need to be taken out before they completely overwhelm the country.

Very true.  Many years ago, when we were living elsewhere, I decided to get cavity wall insulation installed.  I had no idea there was a grant available and that I was eligible for it, so I got quotes in the normal way.  After I'd got the quotes I found out about the grant, so asked those that had quoted to re-quote, allowing for the grant.  Price to me was exactly the same for all of them, they were all just going to trouser the grant as extra profit.
