Sports direct unsuitable condition refund

Hi, all comments welcome and appreciated.
so I have recently purchased a pot of trainers online from sports direct.
before the trainers had arrived I already knew I wanted to return these as they was a gift and the person they was for has since decided they wanted something more practical.

That being said, it arrived, I opened it up and checked the trainers were in the box and noticed the box wasn’t in the best condition but nothing too bad. Popped in the returns slip and sent it back at my expense.
I then receive an email saying evri has my parcel and it’s being sent back to me so I contact sports direct and receive the following back …
“ I am contacting you regarding your recent return. Upon return, we thoroughly inspect all items. If an item is returned outside of the 28-day returns window, is in an unsuitable condition, worn, or is a non-returnable product; unfortunately, we will not be able to issue you with a refund or exchange in accordance with our returns policy.
I then receive an email saying evri has my parcel and it’s being sent back to me so I contact sports direct and receive the following back …

Then the attachment says the same about it not being worn, washed and in original packaging with tags and then says “ with this in mind we’re unable to issue you with a refund or exchange”
I have never washed or worn these as they was never for me and never made it to who it was purchased for.

In a few days it’ll be delivered back to me…. What are my options ? Anyone had similar ? Am I just at a loss ?

No, you're in the right but dealing with SD on this is likely to be a difficult experience. You could try sending them back again.0
