Virgin Same Day Cancelation

so I am due to fly to St Lucia this morning, however, I woke up to an email from Virgin saying my flight had been cancelled and that I had been revoked for Wednesday. I managed to plan an alternative flight to the States and then across to St Lucia tomorrow so hopefully I will only miss a day of holiday. (Am I able to claim got the missed day at the hotel?)
Virgin sorted out the flight to Atlanta but said I had to sort out the onward flight and that they would reimburse me.
I have now paid for this flight but as you can imagine last minute it wasn't cheap.
My question is who do I claim against and for what?
I have travel insurance via Amex but I booked the hotel and flight separately to er having never claimed for anything this is a whole new world for me
Any guidance would be appreciated

Worth pointing out now before you even attempt to go to the airport that if you are now going via the US you will need an ESTA. The United States dont do international transit and you will have to enter the country first before then getting on the second flight.0

Yeah I had a very stressful wait until I got approved0

If Virgin had offered to cover your costs, thats your first point of call. Dont go booking business class though.0

Hey! Bummer about the cancellation. 😓 You should definitely reach out to Virgin for reimbursement on the additional flight cost—they advised you to book it. Also, check your travel insurance with Amex for hotel compensation. Safe travels! ✈️
