Any recommendations for good laptop under £250

Wish I had a good answer to that.
I found this 15.6in which can be harder to get vs a 14in

Wondering why you have excluded Chromebooks?  You get alot more for your money, run much faster than the same spec Windows laptop, more secure, boot faster, longer battery runtime, don't suffer from the gradual windows go-slow as cruft builds up and are generally supported longer.

They are pretty much designed for the exact use-case you have described.
