That sounds like what used to be called a 'gentleman', or having 'private means'.
These days I'd go for 'retired'. The state retirement age is irrelevant: I retired at 54 and the insurers were perfectly ok with that.4 -
Sometimes an answer is "not working due to disability" it that's the reason (benefit claim or not) I would select that, otherwise as above "retired".

I've never had to do an online car insurance quote before so I don't know what options they give you, I think the best thing I can do is to phone Direct line and speak to a real person initially and go from there

Since 2011 there isn't s default retirement age, it's up to the person when they withdraw from the workforce.(But an age can be in a work contract but can't be below State pension age, unless a compelling reason).
