I found that for a quick zap the weedkiller in a spray that was cheapish (green bottle) gave a result for minimum effort.
Weedol I used to mix in the watering can and put some in a spray bottle. Not sure what you'd do with the rest at this time of year.......but it's quick working and good.

Any sprays should be used on a dry day. Not sure where you'll find one of those. :/

Glyphosate, being systemic, works within the plant's system to inhibit photosynthesis and starve it to death. Given the time of year, there won't be much photosynthesis going on. Bear in mind that if it works, it will do so very slowly.
    Hi

That's useful thank you.  I might leave it to the spring.  It’s only a small piece of garden I was surprised to see so many weeds, maybe it’s the mild weather  :D

Spring will be far better, the plants will be actively growing then with lots of new growth ready to absorb the killer

    Or there's this:
So much fun, I gave my friend one for Christmas, the year after I gave her some Verbena bonariensis! :D

I hope you don't mind if I ask a weedkiller question.  What, apart from the flammable options above 🤣🤣 would you suggest to remove a very large clump of pampas grass and be able to replant the area in a short space of time.
I'm of the age where digging out all the roots is not an option!
    Thanks in advance.

Short of building a small bonfire on top of the cut stems and keeping it going for a few days, I'm not sure anything would give those results. If the roots died today, they'd still take months to rot to the point where you could remove them.

Thank you @Dustyevsky, I've been out of the country for 15.5 years so no idea what's available here.  I'd done some Internet searches so know the problem with pampas grass.  My current plan is to cut it back and burn the waste, (to reduce seed dispersal), and then apply G4llup to the regrowth - probably for a year or so. 😱  Not what I want to do with respect to the bees etc but so far I've not seen an ecological solution.

You could investigate Ammonium Sulphamate. It can only be sold as compost accelerator in the UK, but if you were to spill a large quantity on the way to the compost heap, it might well kill whatever it lands on! >:)
Another option would be to follow your plan, and then employ a large person with a mattock the following year for a couple of hours.

A sabre saw plus a carbide blade (cheaper sources available) would make short work of the root ball - Worked for me when I grubbed out a very well established clump of bamboo that hired help had given up on (twice).

Thank you all - I have a feeling that this is going to be a long term project. 🤣  I'm not sure my 20 year old B&D sabre saw would be up to the task!
