Standard house insurance wouldn't cover boiler breakdowns - Some policies will have a bolt-on extra along with an increase in premium.
Most people here (myself included) view boiler cover from the likes of British Gas & Home Serve to be expensive for what you get. Pay £120 or more for a product that gives you an annual service and declare a boiler unrepairable if spares are too expensive - Debatable if that is value for money when you can get a service for £60-80.
Baxi have a pretty good reputation for reliability, so I'd be inclined to put ~£100 away each year to cover the possibility that the boiler needs replacing and do an annual service. Although, in 10 years time, gas boilers may not be available, so that wedge of cash will come in handy to pay for a heat pump plus CH upgrades. Quite likely there won't be any heat pump grants available then (or they have been scaled back), but the prices should have come down.

Treasure the moments that you have. Savour them for as long as you can for they will never come back again.

Home insurance can include emergency cover for gas, water and electric installations.  Costs about £100-130 and that includes a gas boiler check and service.  It may also include a contribution should a boiler fail an inspection.

My previous gas engineer who has now retired used to do boiler and then a quick check of hob, oven and gas fire to ensure gas pressure was OK with everything on.

Current engineer only checks the boiler.

I've had a 3 boilers (I've been living here over 30 yrs).  Never at any boiler replacement or annual service has any one of them suggested that I need my very old hob looking at.  And yes they were all qualified/had the certs necessary.  Incidentally the hob was less than 3 feet from where they were standing when servicing so they coulden't miss it.
  • Thanks for all your replies.I will tell him to get boiler serviced annually and hopefully he won’t have any major expensive problems
