I have economy 10 with EDF, so have benefitted hugely from this low rate (especially last winter), ridiculously low to be honest, so it’s annoying they have doubled it almost.  The peak rate is falling from 39.92p to 36.42p (so only 8.5% reduction), as it’s winter the next 3 months bills will be way higher.  I think the peak rate was over 50p if I recall last year (54p rings a bell), so as others have said coming into line.  I was comparing tariff rates since January 2022 the other day and they have increased 45% but the standing charge has gone up 83%, that’s scandalous really.

Hi GBmac04 ... and welcome to the forum.

You are not alone and I do think Eastern SVT E7 users have been poorly treated, especially in mid-winter, however their night rate had been 'low' for about a year so I don't think it was a ploy to 'shaft' customers.

    I have started a switch to E.ON Next, see here ... https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/comment/80462473/#Comment_80462473.
What are the tariff unit rates and SC on that?

... the E.ON Next Pledge 12M Tracker and Next Fixed 12M v6 are discussed on that thread.

Hmmm, I'm very tempted by that Eon Next 12M V6 fix:

    Midlands region:

    Daily standing charge 54.34p
    Unit rate
    34.80p per kWh (Day)
    13.02p per kWh (Night)

    EDF SVR 1st Jan:

    SC 54.34
    Day 35.22
    Night 16.22

Well for me with low Q2 and Q3 usage it wins over Pledge.

That night rate is really good ... that is for 1st Jan is it? just checking  :)

Yep, that's what the 12M V6 quote comes back with

If we had E7 we would go for that decent overnight rates considering the potential for the expensive Jan-Mar months

@GBmac04 I'm in a similar position with EDF, (we also have solar and a big battery storage system), but I'm now used to suppliers doing this winter dance by hiking the off-peak rate up a lot and very slightly dropping the peak rate.  We've had three suppliers do this, always during the winter, and I just switch supplier each time.

I got my EDF price rise email today, with the big hike in off-peak rates, and have spent an hour or so hunting around for a supplier to switch to, but some haven't yet updated their prices.

Your off-peak rate of 8.57p/kWh looks low though, we've been paying 12.422p/kWh off-peak (which will rise to 16.433p/kWh off-peak on 1st January), but I'll almost certainly just switch supplier to avoid this, just need to wait until they've all published their prices for next year (some haven't yet, makes making a comparison now impossible).

My advice to you @GBmac04 would be to hang on until closer to the end of December (when most suppliers should have published their updated tariff information labels) and then look around for a supplier with a lower off-peak price.  It's a lot of faff, as none of the suppliers make this information easy to get hold of (deliberately in my view, they do not want customers doing this!).

My experience is that price comparison websites are a complete waste of time if 99.5% of your total electricity usage is at the off-peak rate, none of them seem geared up to handle this.  Even if they let you enter true day and night rate usage numbers my experience has been that their back end code just cannot handle someone whose day time usage is extremely low.  Some price comparison sites do enable a less challenging route to get at tariff information labels though, but equally this may well be out of date at this time of the year with rates changing from 1st January 2024.

Using the massive price hike figures from EDF I've just received our bill would increase by about 22.5%.  Makes a mockery of the supposed government price cap, really, as suppliers are allowed to load up off-peak prices a lot without falling foul of whatever algorithm Ofgem uses for the cap calculation.

If anyone's interested in how a battery system impacts usage, then so far this year (from 1st January 2023 to today) we've used 10kWh at the peak rate and 3483kWH at the off-peak rate.  Makes a BIG difference when the off-peak rate is usually less than half the peak rate, and the best we can hope for given that they can't get a smart meter to work here (it can't get a signal).

Thanks, be great to have a list of links to up-to-date pdf data like this for every supplier.  I've found it a frustrating experience trying to get accurate and up-to-date information when looking around for the past hour or two.  I suspect the reality is that suppliers don't want this info to be easy to find, in case customers start using it to find better deals!
