Hi everyone, thanks for the replies. I just spoke to the manufacturer and they sent me these instructions, according to the details on page 7, the bulb cover can be removed - http://media3.bsh-group.com/Documents/9000773608_B.pdf

I'm yet to work out whether I have a halogen or filament bulb.

Some of you have suggested removing the grease filters. I am able to do this quite easily but accessing the bulb by doing that alone would be quite tricky as it's hard leaning over the hob and twisting my head 180 degrees to be able to see the fitting.

Be aware that most makes (inc Bosch) do not include the carbon filters when you buy the hood and consequently, the installer will just leave the foam ones in even if they install it in recirc mode. You didn't answer the question about which mode this is installed but if it's recirc only, I'd seriously look at ducting it to outside unless you live in a flat and it's impossible.

Your instructions confirm this "Page 8 = Accessories for circulating-air mode (not included in the delivery)"

Every single extractor I've ever seen that was fitted in recirc mode didn't have the correct filters installed.

Hi, I'm not sure whether it's installed in recirc mode or whether it's ducted to an outdoor vent. How can you tell? Am I right in thinking the best way to tell would be to look on the exterior of my property and see if I can see a pipe / vent? I do live in a flat, but it's not a conventional block of flats - it's a large house split into two flats. My kitchen is on the 1st floor.

You look for a vent in the outside wall behind where the cooker hood is.  Or an obvious boxing in of the outlet pipe running across the kitchen to an outside vent.
    If it sticks, force it.
If it breaks, well it wasn't working right anyway.

Switch it on high and see if it puffs air out of the grill on the side of it's chimney.
